The Dailv Review. Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, March 15, 1881. ■qrroßS: B. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. <• Daily Review" ouly 35 cent* per mouth. Wry it. A Graphie Discription. Bob Burdette in a recent letter to the Burlington Hawkey e> written from Penn sylvania, says: "In the clear blue skies the stars arc glittering like points of steel. Everything is clearly cut, rigid in its outlines, icily unyielding in contour. The mountains seem to be carved out of glacial blocks; the pines seem to have lost their graceful stateliness and stand stiftiy as telegraph poles. They would snap and break like icicles if the biting wind that is howling down the dark glens and wiuding valley should try to bend thein. The river is solid to the bottom ; the very surface shows that. The shriek of the locomotive whistle can be heard for miles, clear, shrill and trailing away with multiplying echoes. Now and then rattling noisily over the frozen road bed, the train strikes one joint that was smooth and even a week ago, with a shock that jars everything on the seats and in the racks and the car careens like a yacht. The speed is only moderate for the frosty rails are brittle as glass, but the train goes jarring, and rattling and jolting along, so that we seem to be thun dering down the winding valley of the glittering Susquehanna a thousad miles an hour. The stoves are growing scarlet but the windows are powdered with a veil of frost and the lloor is cold as the touch of death. How everything creaks. How the breath of the ice king follows the breakman in at the door. We pass a freight train, and like a defiant god who spurns the rule of the winter king a brake man stands on the top of the rocking car at a brake whose iron icy kiss burns like fire to his hand through the course, thick glove. Eight degrees below, the tlier inomerer marked when his train left Haj risburg. How any man can live out there half a mile is beyond comprehension. It's the wife and the babies that keep the brave fellow's heart warm and throbbing while he stands up there in that atmos phere of death. And puce in awhile the company he works for, assembles its di rectors and cut his wages down a few cents. The pass in the mountain has swallowed up the train and the heroic figures at the brake, in rayless gloom and the howling, icy winds. God! the hand that would take one cent from his pocket, one penny from the pay he gets for the work he does, is the hand of a a robber. i The State Crpitol. In the State Senate Friday bills were reported favorably punishiug persons who deface buildings or fences by posters or otherwise; regulating the componud ing of physicians' prescriptions; regulat ing the storage of petroleum by incorpo rated companies, and regulating the in corporation of mutual assessment associa tions for insurance of lives. Among the bills introduced was one for the punish ment of "arbitrary assessments on can didates for political offices." The Senate bills relating to auctioneers in Philadel phia, and requiring the payment of wages in lawful money at regular intervals in coal mines and iron factories passed sec ond reading. Adjourned until Monday. In the House, the bills establishing an Industrial and Educational Museum and Cabinet of Science and Art and providing corporal punishment for wife-beaters were reported favorably. The bill for the ap pointment of committees to investigate convents aud atylums were reported atively. Mr. Faunce moved to suspend the rules and consider on first reading, the bill repealing the Recorder's act of 1878. The motion was lost—yeas 99, nays 58—the affirmative vote not reach ing the necessary two-thirds. Mr. Lun pis called up his anti-pol igamv resolu tion, and it was adopted and sent to the Senate for concurrence. Mr. Stewart, of Philadelphia, oflerrd a resolution for the appointment of a joint committee of four Senators and eight Representatives to in vestigate charges of discrimination by railroad companies, the committee to have power to send for persons and pa pers. The resolution was read a second time—yeas 117, nays 97. Mr. Souder then moved to indefinitely postpone. Lost—yeas 17, nays 115. Pending action the House adjourned until Monday even ing.
