A Nine-cent Dinner. llow to Cook a Nine-Cent Dinner was a subject sufficiently attractive to draw nearly five hundred persons, mostly la dies, last evening to Franklin Institute. Suspended above the platform, in full view of the audience, was a gigantic bill of-fair which read as follows: "A nine cent dinner for twenty-live persons. Fea-soop, 15 cents; Irish stew, 20 cents; curly potatoes, G cents : pork and beans, 32 cents; veal croquettes, 25 cents; cold slaw, 10 cents; maccaroni, 18 cents; rice pudding, 20 cents; apple dumplings, 30 cents; coffee and milk, 23 cents." The platform presented an unusual scene. On the right was a stand covered with pots, pans kettles and numerous other kitchen utensils. Next was a table upon which to prepare the ingredients for the dinner, while on the left was a sun-dial gas stove, already to receive the dishes for cooking. Francis Wells open ed the exhibition by explaining that a nine-cent dinner was given on March 3d at the New Century Cooking School, No. 1112 Girard Street, to twenty-live per sons, aud it was the object of the man agement to practically demonstrate just how such a dinner could be prepared so economically. Mrs. liorer, the tutor at the school, was then introduced, and she appeared prettily attired in a dark dress covered with a dainty white apron and wearing a picturesque headdress of the Martha Washington style. She explain ed the manner of cookiug the different articles at considerable length.—Philadel phia Press. This paragraph on secondary education from the Boston Advertiser is worth con sideration : "Education is more impor tant than instruction, for the aim of edu cation is character, while the purpose of instruction is knowledge; and character is better, as well as stronger, than knowl edge. The subject thus alluded to marks the great difference between the Boston Latin School and such establishments as Eton and Rugby and the few good acade mies of New England. These can edu cate, while the American public high school can do very little beyond instruc tion. This fact need not be disguised, and will explain why our public schools, particularly those of the secondary grade, are more than and Rugby in need of superior teachers—teachers who not onlj r know much and do much, but also are much and know well and do well. No fault is found here with the teachers of the Boston Latin School. On the con trary, they deserve confidence and re spect, and if need be praise. But the general experience may be stated to be, that the best appointed countries, such as England, France, Germany and the United States, have six, and perhaps twelve or twenty good university profes sors to one good secondary school teach er. Yet a good high school or academy teacher should beheld in the same esteem * as a distinguished college or university professor. It is to be regretted that so lew young men of character and high scholarship devote the whole of their life to secondary instruction." The steamship Erin arrived in New York Wednesday with twenty-three men rescued from the Drumduff, abandoned in a sinking condition, March 3d. Commu nication between the vessel was md.de by a distress rocket and a line, and the crew rescued by means of this line after severe hardship and exposure. Marriage is a life sentence.
