An Irishman and two proteslant divines were once journeying together in a stage coach, when in the course of a heated theo logical discussion, one of the dominies said, " Bat, if the devil should send one of his an gels for one of us, which do you suppose he would take?" "O, me, of course," was the ready answer of Bat, " What makes you think so?" "O, because lie's sure of you any time." This reminds us that purchasers are always-certain to get the best groceries at JAMAS MCCAIIE'S, headquarters "and don't you forget it." KNIGHTS OF HONOR.—The fee for initia tion in Crista! Sad case of Poisoning in Monroeton. Mrs. 11. 11. Ingham, one of our most es teemed citizens, lies at. this hour terribly stricken, and wc fear fatally so, from u dis ease contracted by the poisoning of one of her hands in the follo.vving manner: She nursed and cared for her orphan niece, Mol lie Bowman, through a course of the scarlet fever, which prevails here, and in washing the napkins used in wiping the saliva from the mouth, was poisoned through a pimple or slight sore on the hand; and now the en tire system is involved. Dr. Hull is assisted by Drs. Bratt, of Towanda and Ingham of Troy, who are employing their utmost skill to alleviate the suffering of their patient. We have delayed this notice for a day or two to lie a little more definite. At present Writing the chances are about equal. The scarlet feyer only obtains now among us in a few sporadic cases. N. D. P. Monroeton, Feb. 18. Supplementary statement of the financial condition of the borough of Towanda 011 the 16th day of February, 1881: Oorders outstanding Apr. 1, IXBO, $4,060 OH Orders issued to this date, 4,457 06 Total orders, $x,4S7 14 Orders redeemed during the time. 6,559 63 Total indebtedness, $1,927 51 ASSKTTS 1 Due on Dup. for 'XO, $1,746 88 " Land returned, 299 59 " Switch rent, 90 00 Cash in Treasury, 797 92 $2,864 73 Of the above indehtednesß, SI,OOO is in one order, due Aug. 20, 1881, and the holder i not willing to have it redeemed until due. In addition to the above assets, there is $991 84 due from citizens for side walks put down by the liorough, not all collectible. It will be seen by the foregoing statement, that notwithstanding the Borough tax was reduced one half in 1878, and only 12 mills assessed for 18X0, the debt has been steadily reduced and the collectible assets are suffi cient to pay the further necessary e.vpendr tures for the balance of the year, ending March .".Ist, 18X1. leaving the Borough entire ly out of debt. This happy state of tilings u the result of great care by the Council, in counting the cost of proposed new work, not absolutly necessary for tin; public good, and rigidly enforcing the collection of all taxes 011 exhibit ions, peddlers, ifce. The tax of five mills assessed for the sup port of the Boor, for the year ending March 31, 18X1, is sufficient and will cover all out standing indebtedness, and should the com missioners he ready to take I ho charge on the Ist of April next, no further assessments of taxes by the borough for that purpose will be necessary. The usual detailed statement of the r eeipts and expenditures for Borough and Boor pur poses will he published at the proper time. An frequent inquiry is made of the Bor ough Treasures as to the public school debt, may be proper for me to add that the Bor ough government lias 110 jurisdiction or con trol over the department of Bublc Schools.
