Sturdivant, of Wilkcsbarre, lias been nominated as Supervisor of the Cen sus for the Fifth district of this state, vice Jadwin rejected. The general committee of the Irving Ilall Democracy, ut New York City Fri day evening elected Abram S. Hew it, : chairman. A meeting in New York the other eve ning, called to organixe an anti-Grant club, tabled a resolution agaiust a third term, and adjourned. Steinmrn and Hensel editors of the Lancaster Intelligencer , and attorneys, ! have been disbarcd for publishing an ar ticle reflecting upon Judge Patterson. The Cabinet after discussing Alaska matters to some extent, decided to rec ommend legislation looking to the estab lishment of a civil government for the territory. William J. Pollock, has been nomina ted for Supervisor of Census in Philadel phia, in place of Dr. Sherwood, rejected. It is generally conceded that Pollock can be conflrmed. John Swinton, in a letter to Denis Kearney and others, announces that he cannot be the presidential candidate of the National party, because he is not a native of the United States. Judge Wright, who assaulted ex-Sec retary Delano in Washington some time since, was convicted and on Saturday was sentenced to pay a line of SI,OOO and thirty days imprisonment. The Dauphin County court adjourned on Saturday until the 2Glh inst. It is un derstood if Kemble and his associates ap pear new bail will be accepted till that time. Princeton college is to have a new telc j scope, costing $25,000. The money to purchase the instrument has been sub scribed by friends of the college, Robert Bonner heading the list witli a SIO,OOO subscription. The Rev. Dr. William Crawford, of Green Bay, Wis,, preached an excellent sermon on whispering in church, reprov ing the vice in flt terms. It has been printed and ought to be very useful, for the vice is one of rapid growth and wide prevalence. The Supreme Court of Michigan, has decided that it is not a violation of the Sunday laws of the State to subscribe money on Sunday to buy a church, or to help to build one. It is a lawful con tract if made on Sunday. Such promises may be enforced in the courts of law. The vote of the House of Representa tives to concur in the Senate amendments to the Star Route Deficiency bill, against the unanimous recommendation of the Appropriations Committee, is considered as a declaration that the administration of the Post office Department has been efficient and honest. IQlic receipts of the American Bible So ciety for March were $72,989 94, and the payments $50,243 11. The receipts for the year ending March 31 were $608,342 - 28. The number of volumes issued in March was 95,080. The whole number of copies issued from the Bible House during the year, not including those issued in foreign lsnds, was 1,130,345.
