and on February 28.
The Canadian Governor General yester
day gave the royal assent to a bill re
pealing the insolvency law.
The Blaine man captured the Kansas
c nvention, a d the Grant men of the state
say they did it through tyranny.
Journeymen carpenters of Allegheny
City have struck for $2,50 per day. They
have been receit ing l'rom $1.75 to $2.
The Senate rejected the nomination of
Alexander C. Wells, of Louisiana, to be
Surveyor of Customs for the district of
New Orleans.
A dispatch from Milwaukee to the Chi
cago Times says that Miss Lavina G.
Ode!!, of Janesville, the well-known wo
man lawyer, died there yesterday morn
ing.
Senator Thurman was at the Capitol
building, in Washington, yesterday, and
appeared to be in good health. lie did
not, however, occupy his seat in the Sen
ate.
ChaiDs M. Ilendley has been promoted
to the position of executive clerk at the
White House, to till the vacancy caused
by the removal of Charles L. Chapman,
wiih whom a scandal was associated.
The Senate exodus committee yesterday
heard J. G. Lewis and James T. Rapier,
the latter being a colored man. Rapier
gave a number of illustrations as to the
bad treatment of the blacks in the South.
During March the Mints coined: Of
gold, 25,000 double eagles, 233,840 c iglcs
and 454,700 half eagles, the value of the
whole being $5,112,200; of silver, 2,350,-
200 dollais, 200 half dollars and 200 quar
ter dollars, the value of the whole being
.$2,350,370.
At the public sale of the stocks, bonds
and other effects of the bankrupt estate of
Jay Cooke & Co. there was no bid for
Ogontz, Jay Cooke's former residence.
One hundred and forty-six lots of West
ern land, appraised at $115,880, were also
offered without a bid being made.
A novel note was received yestcryay by
the Commissioner of' Internal Revenue.
It was from St. Louis, bore the signature
of "O. 8.," and contained SSOO. The
wrltersaid: "I intended keeping this mon
ey because the government owes to me;
but upon reflection I concluded that two
wrongs did not make one right."
When Kearney's case was called in the
superior court yesterday, the prisoner's
counsel moved for a postponement for
two weeks on account of the illness of his
client. Judge Freelon, after hearing ar
gument, postponed the case till Monday
April 5. Reports say the agitator is com
pletely prostrated by the result of the
election.
While Miss Lizzie Sluar , of Lawrence
ville was sweeping, her clothing took lire
from a stove. Her mother tried to ex
tinguish the flames, and in her alarm
gave the cry of Are. A neighbor came to
the rescue and succeeded in putting out
the flames, but not until Miss Stuart was
So severely burned that her recoeery is
doubtful. Mrs. Stewart's arras were al
so burned badly.
