And so say a good iinnv friends here. EVSTKK.—TIi • I'otiai 01 Eas.er, obsirved by the Christian Church in commemoration of the ressurrcction of Christ, occurs to morrow. The name of the festival originated from the b dief that Christ was typifi ul by the pas chal lamb, ordained by Moses in the feast of the passover; thus Paul says in 1 Cor. fi, 7. "For even Christ our passover was sacritici d for us." The first Christians were, therefore, considered to eontitiue the Jewish feast: un derstanding by the lamb which was sacrificed at the festival, .Jesus who suffered for man kind. Among the Roman Catholics and Creeks, Easter is the mo>t joyful festival of the church, and is also observed with great solemnly by the English church, the Luth eran and the European Calviasists. The Creek and Roman Catholics did not e debrate it at preeisely the same time, and while some Christians were mourning in commemoration of the passion, others were rejoicing in the ressurrcction of the Saviour. In the second century the dispute became warm. The East ern church would not discontinue the cele bration of the feast at the same time with lilt? .Jewes, whilst the Western church | insisted upon celebrating it without the pas-1 ehal laml), and beginning on Sunday, the day of Christ's ressurrcction. It was finally set tled by the council of Nice, in 325, that, tin' feast should he held on Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal cqueiidx, and not on tlit! same day with the Jews. The | English name Vaster, uml the Herman Ostern, are most probably derived from the name o tin? feast of tlie Teutonic goddess O.tera. which was celebrated by the ancient Saxons < early in the spring, and for which, as in many | other instances, the first missionaries wisely ! substituted the Christian Rust. Easter fires, Easter eggs, and ma y other customs and superstitions, have all their origin from the ancient heathen feast,, which as the celebration of the ressurrcction of 1 nature, was very appropriately succeeded by ] the festival which caiiuucuiorutcs tlic rcssur- i rection of Christ. The day will he observed with appropriate i exercises in the Episcopal, Catholic and Uni- J versalist Chinches of this place. At Christ Church (Episcopal), in addition to the UMiai i eiiurcn service, the Sunday School will hold Its annual festival at .'5 o'clock.
