It is better to need relief than to want heart ■jo give it. Ice several inches thick is being gathered from a pond in W \ so\,hy sonio < f ourcitizens. It is of poor quality, but better than done. People who vi--.it Elmira will find tlie I)ela van House not only co venient, but one of the best kept hotels in the city. The question which agitates the average Democratic politician of this county now, is whether I'IOLKT, PACKER, A Co., are to con trol the actions of the party in this county this year. The lecture last evening was attended by a goodly number, notwithstanding the storm, and Gen. Kir. PATRICK'S vivid and T rilling diseription of "Sherman's March to the Sea,'' wus attentively listened to. The General is one of the finest speakers in this country. Master ARTHUR WK/II.S, who resides with his grand-father, Col. (. F. M ASON, South Main street, narrowly escaped being crushed to death beneath the wheels of a wagon yes terday. While the 'busses were coining from the 11 o'clock train, the boy was riding on K IRWIN'S baggage express, just in front of Ward House team, and when near the Post oflice jumped oil", and in order to avoid the 'Bus, stepped one side, just us Dr. JOHNSON was passing. The wheels of the Doctor's carriage struck the lad, throwing him to the ground, and inflicting several severe cuts about the face and head. After promptly dressing the wounds, the Doctor took the boy home. No blame attaches to any one for the accident; but it should prove a warning to boys against the habit "catching on" wag ons on the street. MILLER, an appeal from the Common 11 -as C >urt of Wyoming county, says the I'hiladt I ha Times, ranks as the funniest case of the ses sion of the Supreme Court. J. C. SciIKNL'K, who is denominated by his own council as an illiterate and ignornt Dutchman, asked the Supreme Court to reverse the decision of tin lower Court, which refused to open judgment on a note which he signed as security for one THOMAS MAY. He alleges that MVY bought some goods of M. C. MARTIN, an agent of TIIOMAS A. MILLER, for SIOO. SCIIKNCK was asked to sign the noto as security. This lie refused to do unless he was himself secur ed. Tin n MAY, in the presence of M \RTIN, piopesed the following securities: First, fifty dollars, which was never paid; second, a claim against another party, representing to SCIIKNCK that it was a judgment; third, he assigned to him a receipt for $1,450, money which MAY had paid on a judgment against him. The latter item was so grossly absurd that even SCIIKNCK doubted its value. He appealed to MARTIN to know whether the receipt would secure him. It is allgod that MARTIN replied that it would, and thereupon wrote an assignment, of the receipt to SCIIKNCK. The latter tin u signed a security. It is urged by nis counsel that the reason of the refusal of the Court below to open judg ment, was that the application for relief had not been made by SCIIKNCK, but by MAY, the other signer of the note. Counsel for MILLER, pooh-pooh that SCKNCK is so ignc rant. They also urge that MILLER is not liable for the statemi nts made by MARTIN, as to the character of the collateral security offered by Mav to induce SCIIKNCK to sign the judgment note. The argument raised many a smile, and re lieved for a time the dreary monotony of the business of the Supreme Court of Penusyl vunia. Decision reserved.
