Why Noil Edmunds Is one of the ablest men of this generation in the Senate; he is tlk.)r -ougly trained in politics and statesman ship. He bus a masterly comprehension of all the groat subjects that have been be fore us. Ju the debate lie is a great power, not by the use of rhetoric or what is termed eloquence, for he detests all dis play and pretence, but by sheer force of brain.-. lake Webster, he has the clear ness of statement t hat amounts to demon stration. He is a great lawyer. He unites tie* rare greatn ess of keenness in details with the most comprehensive mastery of principles. His mind is lucid and uncou fused, through ami through. His moral soundness is eaqual to >iis mental. No man ever had so much as u thought of vuestioning his integrity. In polities his "stalwartism" is accept able to tbe most stalwart. Nor is there a disciple of the "generous discontent" in criticism who docs not respect him. It 5s rarely or never given to man to unite the respect of all shades and classes. Every Democrat in Congress will speak well of him. Yet he is the sharpest critic in the Senate, and himself to pcrionn a great deal of vastly important service in objecting to party or unwise legislation. He is able in every Held —law. legisla tion. statesmanship praetiele politics. He ia careful in making up his judgments and linn m maintaining them. He is utterly without, fear or embarrass ment in expressing and maintaining opin ions. He has the great quality of equity and courag*. He is permeated in every drop and fibre with the spirit of American ideas of liber ty and political progress. He is available. Every Republican now spaper would speak well of hint—-every ♦.me, stalwart or liberal—every neutral paper, every religious paper with Repub lican leanings: indeed every Democratic paper would acknowledge his ability, his learning, his experience, his honesty, his fearless adherence to principle. In two weeks after his uoiniurtion every journal and every orator would be enthusiastic. The Republicans would only have to say, "There he stands!" An insinuation against his reputation would cause only a laugh everywhere. That is unassailable, lie would unite every fact ion of the party, and sweep in every honest independent voter. Why should not New England present Edmunds at Chicago?— Jlurtford {Com i.) Commit.
