found to work very effectively.
A home is soon to be opened by some
women in Brooklyn to help repentant fe
male ex-convicts.
The Friendly Sons of Sf. Patrick, of
New York subscribed £2,500 for the re
lief of the Irish suli'erers.
Senator Davis, of West Virginia, is re
ported to be the wealthiest man in his
State.
Four stores and the Wagner House on
Jacob, near Main street., Penn
wcr; burned yesterday.
The Hoard of Pardons ha.s agreed to ■
meet on the 27th iust., to consider the
riot bill bribery cases.
The jury in the Iluchoi/ case at Bridge
port, Cotin, failed to agre% aud were Un
charged.
' Mr. John A. Bingham, Minister to Jap
an, will be a candidate for renomination i
to Congress in his old district.
''Brick*' Ponieroy's Democrat, at La
Crosse, Wis., has heed sold to Alexander
Xevins, who w ill make it a Republican
evening newspaper.
The oldest graduate of t.hc College of
New Jersey is John A. Cuthbert, of A'a- j
bama. lie was graduated in 1805, and, ,
although now more than ninety years of ;
age, is sC.U practicing law in Mobile. f.
The delegates to the Methodist L'rotes
tent Conference, now in session, together
with their ladies, were received by the
President and Mrs. Hayes yesterday af
ternoon.
The canvassers of the Chicago Times
have now ascertained the opinions of
281 Republicans in Illcnois, of whom 5,-
282 are for Blaine, 2JK55 for Grant, and j
1,001 for Washburne.
One hundred masked men broke into the
jail at Winchester, 111., early yesterday
morning, opened the cell of Joseph J.
Field, and shot him. He was convicted
of murder.
It is announced'that Captain William B.
Hart will he appointed chief ejerk of the
State Treasury under Treasurer Butler,
Mr. Chris. Mangee, of Pittsburg, having
the place of cashier.
The Senate has passed a bill, at the
special instance of Mr. Bayard, removing
the political disabilities of Roger A. l'ry
or. General l'ryor is one of the last of
the erring brethren to resume his place as
a citizen.
It is reported that the frieds of Senator
Ferry of Michigan will urge him at Chic; -
go as the Republican candidate for Vice-
President on tlie ground of his party
fealty and of his experience as presiding
officer of the United States Senate.
John M. Palmer,of Illinois, one of the
founders in that State of the Republican
party, has formally annouccd himself as
acandideate for the Democratic nohina
tion for President on the platform ol State
Sovereignty. The world does move—
and the wrong way sometimes.
Methodists Church of Canada has for
ty-four missions among the Indans of the
Northwest Territory, thirty missionaries,
ten native assistants, aud thirty-one hun
dred and fifteen members. Between Pug
et Sound and Alaska there are six Metho
dist missionaries and a number of teaches
among tlie Indians.
A dangerous S2O United States Treas
ury note has made its appearance in Chi-
cago. It is of the series of 1875, letter P,
and is printed on imitation fibre paper.
The shading under the words "Uuitcd
States"' is darker than in the genuine note
but the general appearance of the bill is
excellent.
