The total receipts of lumber at Chicago during 1879 were 1,467,720.000 feet, an in crease, for the year of 25 per cent. The townelections in Maine have proven a severe rebuke to Garcelon, nearly every town goes Republican. Under the call of States in the House for the introduction of bills yesterday, 168 bills and resolutions were offered. In a letter from Doublin to the Tribune James Redpath gives a terrible picture of the people in the famine stricken coun ties of Ireland. The Empress of Austria, it is asserted, never rides a horse after he has once thrown her. Her Irsh stables coutain six horses for her own riding. Although the Edison light is pro nounced a failure, he is to begin lighting the streets of New York, within a short time. The President has withdrawn the uaiue of Pinchback as Naval Officer at New Or leans, leaving Lewis, the present incum bent, undisturbed. Messrs. Sullivan and Gilbert are credi ted in the London papers with dividing as their share of the Fifth Avenue Theatre receipts, the pleasant sum of *5,000 a week. Charles E. Smith, late editor of the Al bany Evening Journal , will make applica tion to the Supreme Court to-morrow for a receiver for the Journal company and an accountant. Smith holds one-eighth interst. The coinage at the American Mints in February was as follows: Gold, 594,120 pieces, worth *5,844,850; silver, 2,301,- 609 pieces, worth *2,300,740; miner coin age, 5,391.300 pieces, worth *24,399. It is reported that Robert J. Burdette, the wit of The Burlington (Iowa) Hawk eye, has broken down from overwork, and has been compelled to cancel some leet ure engagements. As he is not yet a young man,, it may be hoped that the in terruption of his work is but temporary. Dr. W. C. Doane is a great favorite in Williamsport, where he has returned to reside. ' Charles NcCartby, father of the girl Kate McCarthy whose sad fate by freezing to death from exposure in the water and ,ice i of the Chenango river in Binghamton a short time ago is not yet forgotten, died at his residence in that city on Monday, in his 64th year. His death was due SQlely j to hip grief at his daughter's sad end. Gideon Frost, a quaker, aged 82, died at Grecnvale, L. 1., on Wednesday of last week, leaving property valued at half a million of dollars.
