Assisistant Secretary of the Treasury Ila wiry thinks the contest between Grant and Blaine in Illinois will be very close. General Grant is to receive a meclai from the Academy of Fine Arts of the City of Mexico. Prominent New York Democrats are declaring against the policy of nominating Mr. Tiiden for President. The winter palace of the Czar is said to be tlie most insecure place in St. Peters burg for the Imperial family. The election expenses of Lord Ramsay at Liverpool were s9s,ooo—witli nothing whatever to show for them. Gen. Cameron's health has been greatly improved by his journey to the South,and he is getting ready for agricultural work ou his Lancatcr farm during the Spring. Northern Democratic members of Con gress are afraid to take hold of the uni versal amnesty bill, and counsel moderc taion. Senator Dawes, it is reported, lias been named by the Indians whom lie has been cross - examining: "Great - Chief - Who- Asks-Questions." The town hall at Stoughton, Mass., and seven other buildings in the business por tion of the city were destroyed by fire Friday. The town records were bnrned. Loss $42,000; insured for $21,500. Mr. Fairman Rogers has declined to ac cept the post of Provost of Pennsylvania University left vacant by Dr. Stille. It lias been offered to the Rev. Phillips Brooks, and he lias not yet decided upon an answer. England expects every man to do Ids duty, but is convinced that charity should begin abroad. The American contribu tions in aid of Ireland exceed SOOO,OOO. The amount actually subscribed in Eng land is not more tlion $125,000. 1). Gelib, the agent for the Pennsylva nia and Northern Central Railroad com panies at Marysville, Pa., was killed at that place Saturday afternoon. He step ped on the track to avoid a runaway horse, and was struck by a shifting en gine, Twenty seven years ago Thursday there were born into the family of Win. Wells, when the three happy bouples took the train for Chicago. Thirty emigrants passed through Oma ha Thursday, on aspecinl train bound from San Francisco to New York, at $35 each. Two hundred and fifty others followed fifty Chinamen being among them, bound for New York laundries. It said that a large number of Chinese are preparing to leave San Francisco soon, owing to their persecution in California. About SOOO,OOO was saved in the con struction of the lioosac Tunel by the use of an improved drill. The inventor of the drill, who died in Boston on Tuesday last, received only $5,000 for the con trivance. He also invented a series of signals for use on ships of war, which • were highly commended by the Govern ment and were patented bosh in this i country and in Europe. He made many > other contributions to labor-saving ma chinery, but not withstanding his inven tions lie never realized even a comfortable competence from tliem owing to the difficulty of introducing them before the expiration of the patents.
