Yesterday's edition having heen exhausted, we reprint one local item to-day, in order to accommodate those who failed to secure copies of it yesterday. Commissioner's Clerk LKWIK has the Feb ruary election papers ready for delivery to the officers of the several districts in the county, and requests that persons entitled to the custody of them call and got them. At the suggestion of Mr. T. C. DKLAXO, Supt. JfDD ran a special train to Monroe this afternoon, for the accommodation of those who desired to attend the funeral of the late A. (1. ( it AX.MKK. A goodly ntunher availed themselves of the opportunity. "The hens think it is spring, the weather is so mild, and are already supplying us with plenty of eggs, and I wish you would just call at MCCAUK'S store, Merctir Block, and get one of those hams I saw noticed in the 11 K VIKW the other day. Mrs. JONES says they have bought them for several years, and never eat any other kind when they can get them. She says they have a peculiarly pleas ant flavor, which tlicy have never tasted in any other." The foregoing was the message a frugal wife gave her husband as he was starting for town the other day. Mr. Mo ( AUK says if lie had the facilities for putting them up. lie could sell all the hams prodced in the county. The marriage of ('. S. DAYTON, the artist, to Miss JESSIE liocKW ELL, Wednesday even ing, was a very pleasant affair. The guests were quite numerous, as the parties are among our most popular young people, and have hosts of warm friends. The "silken kind" was tied most elegantly by Dr. STKVV AKT, to whose congregation the bride and groom both belong. Miss FUANKIK WOODRUFF was bride's maid, and CHARLES T. FOX the groom's "best man." The bridal presents were numerous and valuable. Among the most cherished of the gifts was an ornate silver cake-basket, from members of the "Stewart Band." a missionary society of the Presbyterian church, of which the baide is President. Master FRANK .Mux- TAX YK sustained the reputation of his family and generous-hearted namesake, by present ing an elegant cake stand of cut glass, on a silver pedestal. We have not space to enumerate all the presents; suffice it to say that they were use ful as well as expensive, and atfeded a gratifv ing evidence of the high esteem in which the accomplished bride is held by her many friends. The handkerchief, which is now considered a matter of great importance in the out tit of every lady and gentleman, is a comparatively recent invention. One hundred years ago it was deemed a vulgar object, instead of a mark of neatness, as at the present'.time. French ladies were shocked at the use of the hand kerchief in public, and, until the reign of Empress Josephene, its public use was un known in polite society. The word was avoided in refined conversation. An actor who would have used a handkerchief, even i in the most affecting part of the play, would have been hissed from the stage, and it was i only with the utmost daring that, in the be ginning of the present century, a celelmit' d nctre-s appeared with one in her hand. A i few years later, diir'ng t'c pre-en'ntion of one of Shakespeare's plays, the word was used for the first time on the stage, amid cries of indignation from the audience. I'ei sonal. | \V O.
