Vicissitudes of Warsaw
No city in Europe has known so
many changes of masters as Warsaw.
Founded about the year 850, it was
capital of the independent dukr.iom of
Mazovia until the fifteenth century,
when it was annexed by Poland. In
the seventeenth century its possession
was contended for by Sweden, Rus
sia, Austria and Brandenburg, until,
in 1764 Russia practically annexed it.
Ia 17,95 the >-'ity was handed over to
Prussia, but Napoleon occupied it in
1806, and at the peace of Tilsit War
saw was proclaimed an independent
duchy. In 1809 the Austrians seized
the city, but lost it again, and after
another brief spell of independence
the city passed finally to Russia in
1813.—London Chronicle.

COAL LANDS BEING OPENED UP
Low Cost of Power a Factor in Estab
lishing of New Mines
The impetus given to any section by
a large steam driven central power sta
tion is shtfwn by the situation in West
Virginia, which is the second largest
coal producing State in the country,
i Thousands of acres of coal lands are
being opened up, and a great many
new mines will be in operatiou during
l the next six months because of the low
cost of power made possible by the Vir
ginia Power Company, which operates
a large steam power station in the
Kanawha-New River district.

JOHN A. WALLACE, 73, DIES
Was Joint Owner of Chester "Times"
and "Republican" With Senator
Sproul and 0. R. Long
By Associated Press.
Chester, Pa., iMarch 23.—John A.

HE SIMPLY FORGOT
The Hurried Married Man Didn't
Think, but His Wife Did
He really meant to kiss his wife
this morning as he left the house to go
to work.
But he forgot. He was thinking of
the cares of the shop, of the thousand
and one matters which concern him in
the big world with which he wrestles
for a living for her and the kids.
Anyhow, he said to himself after
ward, what's a kiss? It oughtn't to
take such a mere formality to convince
of his love and trust the woman he
has made the mistress of his home, the
mother of his children. Pshaw! The
chances are she never noticed the omis
sion. So why should he worry 1
But back home a woman wept —wept
not because she doubted her husband's
constancy, nt because she felt that 'he
wouldn't prove big and true and fine
in an emergency, but. because, woman
like, shut within home's four walls,
doomed to another day of petty rou
tine, much of it to be endured all alone,
she wanted that kiss as a token and a
memory—wanted it as proof that not
in her case could the poet write:
'' He's lost, you see, 'cause he married
me;
Goodby, my loverj goodby."
Now if you, Mr. Man, made such a
break as that this morning, do you
know what you ought to do?
Go home to-night with a present in
each hand and plant two kisses where
one grew before. —'New Orleans States.
BLOODTHIRSTY FERRETS
Tbqy Kill Not for Food, but for the
Mere Sake of Slaughter
The ferret is one of the most pe
culiar members of the animal kingdom.
It belongs also to au extraordinary
family, that of the weasels. A branch
of this family is called the polecats,
the European representative of our
skunks, and the ferret is a species of
polecat, generally an albino, yellowish
white in color, with pink eyes.
To hunt and kill mice, rats, rnihfbits
and other small animals is the ferret's
delight. Tt is coldly methodical in its
murderous pursuits and, while it serves
its master well, never tiring In the
dhase and r.ever shrinking from an at
tack, it exhibits HO trace of affection
or attachment toward its trainers, as
nobler animals do. The ferret is a typ
ical killer and blood shedder. It has
no friends and apparently wants none.
It cannot be trusted and will sometimes
attack small children.
It likes to kill not for the sake of
food, but for the sake of killing. The
mere act of taking the another
creature is a pleasure to it . **ow it
got this bloodthirsty strain in its nn
ture no one can tell. Its appetite for
slaughter serves well in ridding our
houses of rats and mice, 'but of what
use is it to the ferret to kill those
creatures? Its nature is that of a
demon, and wherever it sees the life
blood beating at a throat its brutal in
stinct urges it to slit the throat with
its keen teeth and let the life throb
out!— New York Journal.

WHISTLER AND HIS GROCER
An Overdue Bill, a Threat and a Pay
ment Hot In Cash
Whistler's financial affairs were the
mingled joy and terror of his friends,
and the Pennells, in their "Life of
Whistler," give a most amusing
glimpse into this side of his life. On
one occasion he had actually run up a
bill of 600 pounds with a Chelsea
greengrocer, who at last called to in
sist upon payment. Whistler came out
strong on that occasion:
"How—what —why—why, of course
you have sent these things—most ex
cellent things— and they have been
eaten, you know, by most excellent
people. Think what a splendid adver
tisement! And sometimes, you know,
the salads are not quite up to the mark
—the fruit, you know, not quite fresh.
And if yon go into these unseemly dis
cussions about the bill—well,. you
