The Keystone State.
S. Hayden, of Athens, .131.1dford co.,
furnishes to the AthcnB Glcaqer the fol

"The designation of Pennsylvania as

city of Washinglon, near the close•of
the last century, or early in the present.
When the .seat of the federal govern

ofniagniticent, broad avenues, runnin,
diagonally across them e The •three
principal avenues run nearly parallel
through the oily, from the east branch
of the Potomac to Rock creek, near
Georgetown., Of these, the central one
was named Pennsylvania. Avenue, the
,one east of it Massachusetts Avenue,
and 'that north of it Virginia 'Avert,*
" Pennsylvania Avenue, as is well,
known, became the great thotougbfar
of the city, and, whose it was extended
across Rock creek tw Georgetown, a
stone bridge' with a single arch - was
erected, with stones unused in building
the walls of the capitol. In construct=

this circumstance, Pennsylvania, . ob
