Mr. Wood's "Bible A lands" is a book

While there is much in the volume that of

—The Elmira, :Adrertisp!;sneers at the
Williamsport Registe; because the latter pa

Oscr says. And at the same time the Advir:-
tiser is' printed in a tay.ern I Some folks
prefer the Machine-shop to the grog-shop,—
and some don't, it seems.
—The Democrat says it is the intention of
the "boys" of this place to have a grand Base
Ball Tournament in Wellsboro during the
Present Sunimer. Elmira, Corning, Bath,
Addison, Painted Post; Mansfield and Mor
ris Min clubs will be represented. If- the

—The Driving Park in this village is al
ready' a center of attraction. Ev.ery fine
evening there is a crowd of horsemen and
those interested in fine horses—and who is
not?—congregated there. The meeting on
the 4th and 6th of July - promises to be a
large and most enjoyable one. The track is
in excellent condition, and everything is in
apple-pie order.
--We learn from the Index that at a meet
of the President and Directors of the Wells
hero di State Line Railroad, held at .West
field last Wednesday, a committee was ab
pointed to canvass for subscriptions to the
stock of the company. The canvass will be
Commenced at once, and it is hoped soon to
be able to report that the required funds 'are
secured to warrant a commencement of work
upon the road.
—Our readers will hardly need two invi
tations to read the announcement in our. ad
vertising colunins relative to the opera olio
performed at the Academy of Music in this
village next Friday evening. We aro inform
ed that, as•rendered by Prof. Jewett's.grad
tinting class, "The Doctor of Alcantara" is
not only a rich musical treat, but a brilliant
spectacular piece as well.: We trust "The
Doctor's" benefit in this' place will be a
bumper.
—Speaking of the importance of manufac
toriei to 4 town an exchange remarks: "One
manufactory employing a . hundred men will
support an additional population bf five hun
dred people. These hundred families will
disburse annually on an average the : sum of
$750 for each fatally, or $76,000 on an aggre
gate. This money will be drawn into the
tptvn from the outside where the manufact
'tired products are consumed. The interest of
.$75,000,wi1l be $7,500 at ten percent." The
moral of this little story is obvious.
—The Corning Democrat says that by put
ting a few drops of oil of vitriol into a small
vial of soft water a perfeqtly invisible ink is
made, which is recommepded for use on
postal cards. A quill pen must be used in
wrttilig, and on the receipt •of the card it
must he held near the fire, when the heat
will soon turn the sttseen mars as black as
the ace of spades—which, by the way, is gen
erally blue. But if you have any secret mes
sage to send by mail, it will be less trouble
some-end more sensible to use fine/envelope
and k three cent-stamp.
—ln another column will be found the ad
vertisement of the new firm of Taylor 4&::
Spalding— The junior member of the con
cern comes from Cortland, N.Y.', and the
Democrat of that village speaks of him as
follows: "AI. G. Spalding, Esq., who" has
been for some years past with W. G. Brad
ford, our popular druggist, has, in connec
tion with other parties, bought a , drug store
in Wellsboro, Pa., where he has gone to
reside. 'Doe.' is by no meao a giant in
stature, but be understand I his business
thoroughly, and is a gentleman in every
sense of the word. We congratulate the peo
ple of Wellsboro upon this accession to their
business interests."
—During the past week we have paid the
postage from the first of July to the first of
January 'ne - xt on all subscriptions within the
county which are paid up to the latter date,
and have sent a receipt for the tiamelo each
respective subscriber. The hatch was quite
a largeone ; but wet ill gladly add to itat once
on the same terms. Read the notice under
the editorial head and you will .understand
the whole matter. It is probable that the
I )
aw requiring the payment of postage; within
he county will be repealed by next January ;
ut if it is not, we will at _that' time again
prepay the poStage on each adVance sub
scription. Under this arrangement no sub
scriber to the AGITATOR need pay a cent of
postage on his county paper.
—A printer is the best judge of good print
ing, and here is what the Democrat ,Bays of
some jobs recently turned out by ono of the
AGITATOR boy's: t'We have seen some very
fine specimens of printing executed by Will
Christnot of the AGITATOR office, which for
style and design are not inferior to some of
the best city establishments. The work turn
ed out is creditable to himself as well as to
the office whose imprint it bears." Our
neighbor is right, and we make our best bow
for the compliment. With the finest mate
rials, the kind of presses, and workmen
who knOw : how to use them, we are daily
turning out work of which ive have aright to
feel proud. If anybody wants fine printing
of any kind, From a book to a ley's visiting
card, we should like to have lint look at
our specimens. • •
A CoanitcrioN.--. 7 -11 seems we were led
into a slight error in our recent statement
concerning the death of Richard Hinckley.
The following letter from the acting Coroner
will set the matter right :
`To the Raitor of the Agitator.
Sin find in your issue of the 17th in
stant a statement respecting the death of
Richard Hinckley, a brakeman on the Tio
ga Railroad, ;who was killed at Morris Run
by the curs running off the track. The state
inent is made that the cause of the accident
was the cars striking a stick of timber. Al
low the to correct the error by stating that
"I was 'called upon a few minutes after the ac
cident, and Went to the scene of the disaster,
and immediately cinpanneled a jury_to in
vestigate the cause of his death. After a
thorough and exhaustive examination of the
cars, track, ground, ' and everything that
would throw the least light on the matter as
to the cause of the cars running off the track,
every person was examined who had any.
connection, directly or indirectly, with the
aft 'r; so that every step was taken to place

of whi ky for each bite, and Bellefonte drug
gists receive orders every day. It is a sure
cure every time. Old soakers may be found
banging around the woods and bushes in al

—Dr. Ellis Greene who practiced medicine
in Bellefonte and Centre county for over
thirty years, recently went to Boston to visit
his son. He was taken ill there and died.
Ha was highly esteemed as a physician, says
the Republican, was the inventor or com-'

ty-five years as a family medicine.
—A valuable matched team of- bay horses
belonging to Mr. Geo. Sweeley, of Muncy

These straps must have become twisted tight

horses were found dead. The team was val

—A hold•and adroit high Way robbery was
