The "Liberals" and pernocrata of Ttogs'aiinty held

them forlornly conscious of the fsetthat thq.genimpart

they had fondly pictured him. True totheir instincts,
the shrewd old Democratic wire-pullers cheated their
-poor relations, swallowed the political oyster and left'
the outwitted "Liberals" the empty she,fls . Of Course')
ithe trusting gentlemen who were Op !badly sold feel
quite sore , and dejected; but they musi remember the .
wise proverb of the venerated Dr. Greeley wherein ha
tells us that those who no down with dogs must, ex
pect to get up with fleas. ,Leaving them to - their !gal
reflections on the fleeting nature of "Liberal" 'hopes. we i procecd to 1611 just how the "littlejoker" came to
be found undeithe Democratic thimble, much to the
disgust of the "Liberals" and the amusement of, the
unfeeling outsiders. , . •
The bail was opened by the meeting of the "Liberal"
Convention at Converse ITO, Tuesday afternoon.—=
Our reporter renchettthe field of action after the rimet•
ing was well under way, - As it had been inlverthied as
a "Mass Convention," and *as held during thO first
week of oourt—a tune when there are a great many
men in town from tho different parts of the county—
there was some curiosity to sec and measure ,the
whole "Liberal" party in Mass Convention assembled.
Converse Hall is a room the width of ono stpre and
about fllty feet deer. There were eight benches placed
across the room, each capable of seating about ten
men. These benches were partly occuPled by the
Miu-s Convention of Tioga county's "Liberals. There
were plenty of vacant places on the front seats. There
were some Demoorats present, such as John W. 'fiat
iey, and Mr. Jenkins of the Democrat. Probablyabout
seventy persons were ip the room when the Mass Con
vention was at its milest. -
Dr. Humphrey, of Thiga,.was selected as President;
Capt. Amsbtny and Prof. 'Winters as Vice Presidents,
and V. A. Elliott as Secretary of the Cpnvention. •Prof. ,
F. A. Allen, V, A. Elliott nod Tr. 'F. Taylor were:ap:

Prof. Allen made some extended remarks, in the
course of which he defended!Mr. Buckalew from the
wicked stories the Republicans bad been telling about
hiin. Ike spoke of the Democratic State ticket as the;
"Liberal-Democratic nominees," and pleaded earn•
estly for a close union of the " Liberal" and Done'
erotic forces in tbip county : short, the Prof,:!esor
swallowed the whole Democratic party from lidelcaleur
to Sherwood and recommended the diet to his' , ...Libezo.•
al" friends. lie wound up by moving that the Chair ,
man appoint a committee of seven to confer' ivith the
Democrats.
The Chairman appointed C. H. Goldsmith, Dr. W.
W. Webb, Prof. Winters, Prof. F. A. Allen, 0. F.4ay-'
lor, It. - Roland and H. F. Johnson. Prof. W' era
said that he ntis always ready to show his colors and
stand by iala flag, but in the peculiar position In which
he•was placed in this town, and in view- of his cbu
nectiim with the school here, he thought it beat that
he should decline - to net on that committee. Ho was
therefore excused, and Dr. Huniphrey was added to
make up the committee of commerce.
Then Dr. Humphrey made some remarks in rela-
tion to polities in general, there being no queatloh be ,
fore the house. When he had ende - d, I Mr. V.A. Elliott
said ho thought the committee of conference ought to
be instructed as to what they were to do.
Mr. John W. Bailey, Chairman of the •Democratio
County Committee, said ho suppotted•_the committee
were to fiX upon some persons for candidates for the
offices before the Conventions met in the everting: - lie
thought it would be very awkward for the Convention*
to meet without knowing whom - they were going to
nominate. He had no r authority to do it, but he wei'd
undertake to get a few leading Democrats to meet the
committee at half past five and fix up the thing.
Prof. Allen thought the committees wore to make
the terms of agreement as to the men toi bo slangh.
tered.
Mr. Bailey said nobody was to be slaughtered; the
whole ticket would be elected.• He wantedlt under
stood that when any of these "Liberals" were named
to fill a place they must stand up straight and manful
ly, and not
'Then Mr. Henry Palphramond arose to defend Prof.
Winters for declining to serve on the committee; and
Mr. Bailey replied, " Yes; Prot Winters is all right I"
Mr. V. A. Elliott moved that the conference commit
tee be authorized to recommend a ticket, appoint a
County Committee, and effect a permanent organiza
tion. The motion was carried. Then 11Ir. Dailey went
around the room to notify! the "leading Democrats"
to be on hand promptly at a:3O p. m.
After some tuore random, speechifying, prof. Allen
arose and said a feW.geptleincri had milted to purchase
an organ for the campaign. It had cost them $1,200
tnsidea £3OO more which they were liable to pay, be
sides the expensts. it was to be a campaign paper,
and it wouldn't contain an article that wasn't

be made up of slang, nor would it traduce met, si.d

cd to the faithful to come forward and subscribe.
Mr. V. A. rIDOtt seconded the Professor's aPpeal.—
Ite said he was not au editor by profession, but he had
made up his mind not to respond to abuse from any
quarter. The administration office-holders and organs
are reduced to low slang and: ahntati-, biltho **Ot t .
and he should never abuse any man. In the next
breath he said the Democratsyche won't supportOree
ley arc, as a class, gross ignoramuses. He wanted
subscribers and the names of aglents.
Prof. Allen said they warted local items, too, and
they wanted to keep .np the circulation of the orwar ;
Some meri . had stopped it because it went for Greeley.
Eeen ministers of the Gospel had done so I This last sen
tence was spoken with a sort of holy horror, as if it
was a mortal sin to atop taking a Ortelerpapar. When
the Profs sor sat down, two gentlemen went forward
end gave Mr. Elliott their nmes and'Atre hopektifty
cents tack. Alienist. baultw ird Greeley man, whom a
friend urged to invest in the organ, said be thought
he would wait and get it for-hothiug. Such is the in
gratitude of this wicked world I After another speech.
which nobody paid any attention to, the meeting ail
