The Minor ys "the Republicans of McKean
county Made a - noble fight on Tuesday, altho'
the dissensions in our own ranks weakened us
a little in Semi localities. In mogtof the town
ships, however, the Republicans iliade a very
clean record. LI n localities where the opposing
candidates lit;ea, as was
contest
.they run
ahead of their 'ticket. Thenontest was bitterly
fought on both sides and gloriously won by the
Union men. The derneiciats can not complain
• that their full Strength was not out.; They poll
ed every. vote Withiti their controL in'clu.dirig the
deserters. The /had in hand their *hole party
strength, and they had the benefit of every vote
they' were. entitled to. On the, other hand;with;
• in the Reptiblican organization were these who
seemed diiiiptiried to create discord, and to such
an extent had this been carried on, that many
votes/were lost to us entirely in the township
of keating ea the county ticket. We dd hope
that hereafter p atriotic and unselfrth motives
/will control the action of every Republican:

at the fge of 64. Mo§t. of his boyhood was
spent on Crooked creek, in his native county,
where he enjOyed only the few advantages of i
-an education which a common
, school at that
early day afforded. While he Rvhs still a boy
his father became insane, by which his son was I
east-upon the world with no heritage save his
own inherent energies. About the kie of twen
ty be taught a district school. in 1823, he mar
ried-Miss Marta Andrea's, Whose heart bas al
ways symolghge - d with him in ail bistrials,and r i
whose hand has ever co-operated-with ham in !
his labors: In the same year he moved into
the township of Bingham, Putter cosinty, Where
he resided until May I:1826, when, hatiag been
appointed County Trcasurer, he came to Cont
dersport, at which finite this village consisted of
a single dwelling hquse and Comniimibners ;
Office. Afterward he was JustiPe of the Peace,
then Postmaster, and next Associate Judge.

In 1846 he was elected a Representative to
'the Legislature. Two years after he wes elected
State Senator. While at Harrisburg, by his
manly . deportment and great sociability he
-acquired many friends among the leading men
of the State. At the expiration of his term of
office in the State Senate he was appointed
Superintendent of the Portage R. R.; which
"position be held two years. As a Railrottd
'contractor, he built; in comfiany with .James
NcElrath , ten miles of the N. 'Y. E. 1141. east
of Deposit. Be also built several miles of R.R•
near Waynesboro, Va., and seven miles of the
Sunbury and Erie R.R. not far from Emporium.
He was one

quite a large contract on the Pittsburg and Erie
