behind those of the Union army engaged
in - the more immediate *Snit 'of the
enemy. Notwithstanding our .being far
behind, there were whole Brigade's, and
• even Divisions, still in our rear.. 'We left
our former camp (Winfield Scott ! ) early
on the inorning of the fitli,T(Meuday) and
'marching until three or four P. M., were
halted and ordered to pitch tents. We
were then just in sight •of the Rebel
works at YarktoWn. Bad just finished
putting up our tents' wlien we were or

Until half past six P. M. You can form
'scone idea of our fatigue when you take
1 into consideration the fact of its raining
from early morning until night, and the
mud was actually knee deep in inanv

the 'distance made. Tuesday night we

to our future deStination. I understand
that those who are supposed to 'be well
informed think_ that there is a slight pos

Our own opinioislis that the original

• A story which 'has gained considerable
credence in our Brigade is, that our Gen
eral. (a.Captain of artillery in the Regu
lar Army,) has been ordered to report for
service with his battery, and that tw,o of
the Regiment's composing his Brigade
are to garrison Gloucester Point, while
the other' two are to be put in other Brig

what we call a '..Guard House story,"—
should not be surprised should a few days'
time stigmatize it as one of that Class.
This morning, in tionipany with Ser.
gent Mann,l strolled through the famous
old town which has gained suolfcelebrity
in two wars. The general appearance of,
the town 'would indicate that•it was!
founded before the Revolution, and that
to the foundation, nothing had been add
ed, if, indeed, ,we except the 'rebel bar
racks. A few squalid, old louses, a few
sld chimneys, a court house, remarkable I
only fur its , extreme old age, constitute the
whole of Yorktown. The' location is
splendid, peing on the right batik of thel
York river, on high ground, and over.l
looking the surrounding country. From the rebel works inclosing the:town yo gi
get a splendid view of the country, river
and of the altruist squally fatuous Glou
cester, Point. directly oppusiie.
Of the fortifications I can only say,
that ourlittle General would have reduced
them, had the rebels remained ; but their
reduction roust have cost many valuable
The works are very formidable
and mounted by guns of heaviest calibre.
We noticed three which had burst, caus
ing, we should judge form appearances,
no little t o isternation inside the fort. —•
We noticed only one or two spiked, tho'
nearly ail were loaded. The filth,
the sauce louse habits, the same destruct
iveness, seemed to prevail Kure as at Ma
nassas. The air was perfectly loaded
with the foul stench engendered by neg.
legit of properly policing the refuse mat
ter which 'necessarily accumulates in a
large encampment.
Captain Jones, in common with his.
co -..mend, is enjoying..good health, much
better think, than heretofore, and withal

also listened to the noise of the House

Yesterday afternoon' I went into the con

most beautiful; flowers and some. of the
most curious plants, 'atomic others the
