El • . General Richardson'a.division. was held iti, reseree, and hence our bnnging up far behind those of the Union army engaged in - the more immediate *Snit 'of the enemy. Notwithstanding our .being far behind, there were whole Brigade's, and • even Divisions, still in our rear.. 'We left our former camp (Winfield Scott ! ) early on the inorning of the fitli,T(Meuday) and 'marching until three or four P. M., were halted and ordered to pitch tents. We were then just in sight •of the Rebel works at YarktoWn. Bad just finished putting up our tents' wlien we were or .. - tiered to strike their again, and proceed ing on our wears way, did not again" hal , only fora moment, or two at times; until half-past ten at night. We were at last allowed to unslinc , knapsacks and build , fires, though pitching our tents was pro- j ' We here eked out a little mod icum of rest until dawn of day when we - again resumed the march' and marched Until half past six P. M. You can form 'scone idea of our fatigue when you take 1 into consideration the fact of its raining from early morning until night, and the mud was actually knee deep in inanv „places, and over 'shoes, fully one halt the 'distance made. Tuesday night we . were ordered lei have all baggage loaded, knapsacks slung, and men in tine ready to march at half-past six on Wednesday Morning. The Corder intimated that we, would return to Yorktown and there take river transportation to West Point, some • 'thin) , miles above thiS 'plat. ac- , t cordingly returned; have not yet gone to West Point,,‘thciugh a good Many troops . have. There is sonic doubt existing as to our future deStination. I understand that those who are supposed to 'be well informed think_ that there is a slight pos sibility of our gong to some other point. Our own opinioislis that the original .plan trill yt t be :pursued; though we must confess to caring very :little, so it helps the most effectually to- crusts . the remain ing strength of the rebellion • A story which 'has gained considerable credence in our Brigade is, that our Gen eral. (a.Captain of artillery in the Regu lar Army,) has been ordered to report for service with his battery, and that tw,o of the Regiment's composing his Brigade are to garrison Gloucester Point, while the other' two are to be put in other Brig ades. - Should this prove • true, the sZid 'Pennsylvania will be ono of the Regi ments retained fur active service. Recol lect, I °illy give• the rumor for what it may be worth, not vo'ic'iing for its au- 1 • thenticity. It may after all, torn what we call a '..Guard House story,"— should not be surprised should a few days' time stigmatize it as one of that Class. This morning, in tionipany with Ser. gent Mann,l strolled through the famous old town which has gained suolfcelebrity in two wars. The general appearance of, the town 'would indicate that•it was! founded before the Revolution, and that to the foundation, nothing had been add ed, if, indeed, ,we except the 'rebel bar racks. A few squalid, old louses, a few sld chimneys, a court house, remarkable I only fur its , extreme old age, constitute the whole of Yorktown. The' location is splendid, peing on the right batik of thel York river, on high ground, and over.l looking the surrounding country. From the rebel works inclosing the:town yo gi get a splendid view of the country, river and of the altruist squally fatuous Glou cester, Point. directly oppusiie. Of the fortifications I can only say, that ourlittle General would have reduced them, had the rebels remained ; but their reduction roust have cost many valuable The works are very formidable and mounted by guns of heaviest calibre. We noticed three which had burst, caus ing, we should judge form appearances, no little t o isternation inside the fort. —• We noticed only one or two spiked, tho' nearly ail were loaded. The filth, the sauce louse habits, the same destruct iveness, seemed to prevail Kure as at Ma nassas. The air was perfectly loaded with the foul stench engendered by neg. legit of properly policing the refuse mat ter which 'necessarily accumulates in a large encampment. Captain Jones, in common with his. co -..mend, is enjoying..good health, much better think, than heretofore, and withal itio or= ful of good It. barWe make the following extracts from a letter written to a friend in this county: WARRINGTON, MAY 15, 1862. DEAR FRIEND GEUR6E; We remained in Our nice, new -caw at Goodhope a - - . *eelt and then were brought here Jur ac tive,Provost duty. Co I/ is quartered 'alone in a good brick house fronting the Capitol grounds and oltt a -- dozeii rods • - from the north-east corner of the The remainder of the Rq , t is located in diterent'parts of.the city. Our buskess is patrolling the city and arresting all the drunken and disorderly. and at night all soldiers after half-past fano, who have nut ,the lirovost slarshall's pass. .Besides„ this we shut up grog-shops, dance-houses,. &0., seizing the inmates and contents, taking them to th 3 central gualdlhouse where !lair cases are investigated. The city siVeruss with villainy of all 'shades and grades, and our boys have plenty of business. If a drunken soldier is taken he` is questioned as to where he got his "liokir7 and probably the next evening -the Provost General wakes the place seal], - and -either -.throw the "fire water" Into the gutter or lock it up, according to -circumstances er the conduct of the in -mates. The guard visit theatres . ; gam. ~bling-sal(xma and other places they sus -peat to be the. resort of soldiers. The city-,police act with the guard, directing their liata *ed. helping take care . of the • captured. Night before last mkt company broke up a gaMbling saloon, last night a house .of ill•fatne, taking some soldier's clothes, blankets and recovering the pock et-book and contents of a soldier who had Weft robbed: To night a call Wei made on us to clean;out a siutilar den, and it is the plan to - triune of tke worst to•tnerrow night. The police eta upon Os quite frequently for a squad to help thaw_ hunt out some rascality They have not foil power over thel soldiers, but -the , pmvost ouard can look out far thew, and between the police and patrol who have full power to search everywhere, they mike the rogues hustle their corn sometimes. I have visited many places in and about Washington. Have taken a nap' in the Senate and when not napping have lis. tened to some of the debates, and' have also listened to the noise of the House which is about all you generally bear. Yesterday afternoon' I went into the con servatory and ;some of the ' hot;houses below the Capitol, and saw some; of the most beautiful; flowers and some. of the most curious plants, 'atomic others the Bauvau or Indian Fig, the leaves of which would almost' !cover an ordinarY sized person. If they are the kind of. leaves Adani and Eve used for aprons it would not hitve required many for a blanket.— The Capttot grounds area pleasant prom. enade these warm days, especiully when the fountains are iti operation.
