TANIIARY.I7 1%1 --- Graded Schools, - F RI END CH:tsE Knowing that you Ja e interest to whatever concerns the g interests of your readers,- young or I I venture to give you a brief sketch , 2 1 t i n , to a graded school ju.taterminat..- iu tZis district. Sotne of us have long ,tended for the establishing of this hs o f sc ho o ls ; but as there are nine ~ ,,j oa schools in this township to be vrted by the school fund raised, a ~ j ori t y of our Directors have thought ter were all we could maintain, and eon -lowly no graded school has at any tcen opened in this township (and .t hi n k none in the county,) by the lrgal h a ul officers. A few of us (high pri , te3 , not Directors,) employed a thor. ; A l ly qualified teacher, Miss M. A. Tay. in Axgust, lust, paying $5O for four weeks of five days each, and on the It Monday ia'S.ipteurber school opened i t h twenty-five scholars, more or less ad ,,,eeed. The branches taught were those Anton to common schools with the ad iva a class in French, - and one in physical Geography,. • Very soon after school 'opened, it be- ~me evident that the scholars were at tending it for some purpose teside."iiill initinie." A laudable emulation sprunr , among them, encouraged by the teach r, and all worked with a will. Hamm spand good feeling, with .close applica tioe, wes the ruling spirit. No disnosi- Vin to kick up a fuss or to hick up a jauca seas manifested, but all moved on 7 viantiv and orefitAly. A Public cs smt❑anon of classes was had on Fri dsy before tile close, which could, not hare failed to have gratified any friend of daeation.. nom those present it elicit ed the warmest commendations to teach es and scholars. Stud( nts, who at the opening, knew little . beyond the ground tales of written Arithmetic came to the board and in a lucid, scholarly mann . er demonstrated any example given them from Davie's University Aritlinetic. By -ti:a Grammar class, many of the most dif sentences of our laugua2 , l were read, fi2a!rnd and parsed, without hesitation or mistake; and so of the other classes; ail acquitted theuis:elves in a highly emu inerniabl.3 manner. On TLesday evening foliumng the ex amination, we were treated to a concert of vocal musle by the sgrioo, which excelled anything of the kind I-hove ever listened t.) in Putter county. Thirty or forty pieces (mostly school songs,) opening whit the chzint, " Our Father who art in heaven," and. closing with " We are go ing home to-morrow," were sung by tte eaulars in perfect time, and in excellent harmony and taste. Weduesday evening came and with it the scholar's "-Jubilee," the exhibition, which Was well performed before a house filled to-the last, foot of available space with interested and delighted spectators. When all was done and the teacher came upon the stage calling her flock around her, and in a molt impressive manner talked to them of the pleasant past—the hidden future—the unseen pit-falls by the wayside. into which youthfUl feet are 'fable to step—of the active positions in life they were soon to occupy —admon ishing them to live for a noble purr:se— ta be true men and women—to be con sistent christians—and finally, all joining with their teacher in repeating the Lord's prayer; I say all, taken in connection, formed the most impressive scene it has been my fortune to witness in connection with a school. lam satisfied that the stalants•were benefitted more---that more progress was wade in the right direction during this one term. than is usually made by the same_ grade of scholars in thre terms of a Coin mon school.
