Editor: We had last evening a ing, tangible, but humiliating spectacle the horrors of the liquor traffic exhib din our streets. It was by one who lonbtedly _claims to be a tit i n„ and lit be one if he had not b e en_ vicim d by this infernal traffic. For the credit of our town, I am glad say that it is not often that we see a made insane by liquid poison, prom sding our streets, yelling like a savage, , sling like a wild beait, and raving like maniac. But just such an exhibition , 11 kie had before us. And yet the poor - tare seemed to have some knowledge t he was a human being, with human vette and a !lonian destiny before him, the great burden of his cry was "be te lest I. fall." It would seem that in midst of his wild delirium there was sire welling up from his inmost con ,ousuess, warning him that he was hi e hands of the destroyer, and that . thc ebriate's doom was awaiting him. It is t my design to write a Temperance Lee rs; but to set forth a few facts for the rsiderstion of the public mind, which evidently exist. It is a very evident fact, that there are lee living in our midst, who ate em 'yed daily io dealing out delirium and . ‘fe, misery and death, by the dram, by e bottle, and by the gallon, to their nu waste neighbitis and fellow-beings ; th a fell kttowleage of the ruinous and Plorable consequences that flow from eir acts. They do this with a caleulat : venality; - secretly, .in: the. closet, be ad the door, in the barnjunderany coy that will hide 'them from ihi : public alt etr, and shut out the evidece of their and shame. And when n you talk to e:e persona on the subject,-'they will the very picture of innotence, and th solemn protestations and hypocritical etensione i tell how ranch they are an led by vrhiskey-topers, and !twit hap= a . • pens that• drunkards anti dun ki ng men otitAregite`areund their dciiniciLlike par-- non crows around a - dead:came : is"; atitd they' will Affect:to .he vonderfulty incens ed if von• shoild 'Mein to doubt.their word in the:Matter. - At the same time if you should happea to fake tti - peep under their bed, you would-find a cask filled With the " critter" to - the brim, ready to be dealt out - en - the firsts-miserable victim whose drunken instincts shill lead him that way. Yes,, Mr. Editor, it - is a deplorable fact that we have among us men (and I . fear woolen), to whom this •discription of character . belongs, who are in the daily practice of dealing out this liquid poison. Is there a word in human language that can expresa the meanness of such a char acter? Is thtre any power in language to convey an idea of the extent and enor mity of their crime ? The highwayman, by sea or by land, .is respectable - when placed in-contrast with such a person, for he is no more a murderer-than the liquor dealer, while he may possess some traits of character noble in theinielves, and wor thy of a better calling ; but there is not a single trait in the. character of the rum: seller to redeem him -from merited oblo quy and scorn. The highwayman mur ders his victim putright, and ends his troubles when, he'robs hint : 01#$, purse; but the. rum , seliet inurairis hfs.victtm by a primess that prolongs his sufferings long after he is'bereft of his hard earnings, his peace aod- happiness, his Manhood and .everything that is sacred and dear to him. Ho first cheats fiis unsuspecting .victim out. of his senses by false pretences, and then follows up - his-success by the fasci nations of his trade; until he has destroy ed his intellect,-, debased his Morals and changed his form of beauty and comeli ness, into a reeking, living mass ofputri faction ; and even here he dees Dot cease his hellish work, until the (it:Uri/int /ra n:ens, more human than he, kindly inter poses and puts an end to the. horrors_ of • the -scene. - The liquor;dealer ma;SayS that' he is not responsible fortheevil con sequences that necessarily flow from his bosineNs, that they are incidental' to his trade, which in the present state of socie ty cannot be carried on without them. But. the highwayman may make the same excuse and with equal propriety. lie' does not murder because he takes pleasure in inflicting pain, but. because lie' makes his living thereby, and his business can not be carried on successfully without it. Bath of these classes of men enter upon their Calling with a -full knowledge' of their objects and incidents sand the Con sequences, whether good.or evil, that flow therefrom ;and if there is any difference in point of criminality in the two' classes it-is in favor of the highwayman. I can look with some• degree of com passion upon the poor inehriate,..for he is the most unfortunate of men. But who but an all-wise and just God can mete out to his destroyer the punishment that his crimes deserve, and what claims can_ he have to considerations of mercy who, for the price of a glais of liquor will consign his brother man, both soul aod - body, to degradation and ruin ? With these re marks I leave.the subject for the present. Coudersport, Aprill, 1860, CITIZEN. 94 $lO 00 Or The New York Principia pro pounds the following query.. Its effect in all cases of debility are almost magical. It restores the tone of the digestive organs, infuses fresh vi tality into the whole system, and gives that cheerfulness to the temperament, which is the most valuable of feminine attractions. The proprietors feel flattered , from the fact that many of the most prominent medical gentle men in, the Union have bestowed encomiums upon the Bitters, the virtues of which .they have frequently tested and acknowledged. There, are numerous counterfeits offered for sale, all of which are destitute of merit, and positively injurious to the system. *it( Thrtfistintitts.
