MELANCHOLY SUICIDE WrJust as ourpaper was going to press, a friend announced to us the melancholy intelligence of the death of Maj. D. G. Yosr, a distinguished wember of the Ha gerstown Bar, by suicide. The deceased, it will be recollected, was one of the eak ers at the Whig mass meeting in this place last fall. We understand that for several weeks, Mr. Yon. had suffered from great depression of spirits and melancholy, consequent upon pecuniary embarrass ment ; and on Wednesday last, the first time during that period, visted his office, where he put an end to his existence by blowing out his brains with a pistol ! THE NEXT GOVERNOR pr The Hariisburg Intelligencer, of Wednesday last, contains an able and elo quently written com'cation, of four col umns, nns, urging the no' ion of 'our distin guished. fellow-citizen, lie lion: JAMES COOPER, as the Whig Candidate for Gov ernor in 1847.- ; . There is but . vie opinion upon . this subject here. • i -"SCOTT AND COOPER," will make all. things 0. K. in Pennsylvania. We will endeavoiltereafter 'to make room for a portion of the article alluded to. 71t is rumored in WaiThington that Chief Justice TANEY is about to resign', on account of ill health, and that 11r.IJucu.tN AJY will fill the vacancy. pc - Tli effect of the ews by the Cale floniahas c. VICKERVi... the Whig candidate for Governor of Michigan, built a school house 'on his own land ; and, because . a compe-, tent teacher could not be procured, taught the school himself through the last winter. KULAToPLASTIE.—We have already men tioned in our reports of the sittings of the Kcademy, some experiments in what the French call Kiraloplaqie, which consists in replacing a o diseased cornea-bra -portion of the cornea taken from another individu al, and which, in fact, is a kind of animal grafting. To-day, there was read a coin niunication from Dr. Plouviex, of Lille, in which he states that he recently perform ed the operation on a female, twenty-three years of age, and who became blind from the small-pox at the age of three years.— lle removed the cornea, and substituted by suture that of a young dog which he sacri ficed for the purpose. -The grafting pro cess was entirely successful, but it does ' not 'appear that much benefit was derived from it. The girl does not see well e nough to move about without aguide, and the only difference between her present state - and that before the operation is, that she, can now just distinguish night from day.—French decalemy of Science. A lies. NORTH, of lowell, had a tu mor or cancercut from her breast on Tues day last, while in a mesmeric state.. The operation lasted fifteen, minutes. She felt a little pain and had .a sort of dreamy, in ditirmet notion all the while the operation was gOing on. NATURAL CURIOSITY.-A white chicken with-four legs, is now in the possession of Mr. Ricard . Cruit, of Georgetown, D. C. This freak of nature is the more curious as the chicken is alive and well. A Washington correspondent of the Charleston News says :—lt is feared that Elliot, who killed young Kendall, will be come insane. lam told that he rises from his. bed in the night, and paces his cell in the greatest agony. His trial will shortly come on. • ErinExcx OF CuanAcits.—A young woman brought before the Boston' police laiely, alleged in defence of her respecta bility, that she was acquainted "with all the lawyers in New York."
