VAN BUREN'S STANDTNG ARMY Though the proposition of Van Buren to create a standing army of 200,006 subject tobis absolute control, has excited the alarm and indignation of tho whole South, it has been almost entirely overlooked by the press of the North and East. Frightful as have been the present and the immediately pre ceding administrations in experiments, and expedients to steal away the rights of the people, wo consider the proposition submit ted to Congress by the Secretary of War, and endorsed by the President, as the most startling ofall of thorn and one that is fraught with more real danger to the liberties of the people. It is truo tho plan is dressed up in the plausible guise with which tyrants al. ways deem it necessary to envelope their first encroachments upon the rights of the people. But its real deformity is so shock ing that it is impOssible to conceal it under the most plausible name. It is not enough to shut the eyes of the people to its obnoxi ous features to call it a plan for organizing and discipling the militia. The single pro. vision conferring upon the President the alarming power of ordering them to any part of the country for such a period as he may think proper is enough to array against it every man who is deserving the name of American citizen. It is not enough for Van Bu: en that he has the purse of tho nation and the present standing army at his command. These aro insufficient to carry out his ambitious de• signs of subduing the American people to mere vassals of the crown. It is part of his grand scheme, modeling our government after the monarchies of Europe which ho holds up for our admiration and imitation in his annual message. Are the free citi zens of America prepared to surrender into the hands of any Executive, much less into the hands of one who has shown himself so greedy of power and so willing to trample on right as Van Buren has done the unex• ampled privilege, in a free country at least, of the unchecked command of two hundred thousand armed men. It is true the press of the whole country should speak out bold. ly on this iniquitous scheme, and denounce tt as becomes freemen sensitive of their rights and determined to protect. By arousing the attention of the people of Vir• ginia to its dangerous tendency, the press of that State did more to regenerate it than all other causes put together. Shall we not imitate the example of the noble, old Domin ion 7—Log Cabin Rifle. ADVERTISEMENTS. TO FARMERS. THE subscriber respectfully informs the public that he has invented a now and much improved HORSE POWER AND TECR.A.COMING. To obviate all objections brought against the plans of machines now in use, he has been led to seek for a better one, both in ease to man and horse, and has succeeded beyond his most sanguine expectations.-- As men are daily seeking improvements to lessen their labor by machinery in different ways, the subscriber is convinced that ma chines built upon this plan will, in a great measure, reduce the amount of labor, and remove all objections which aro urged against the machines now in use. These machines are so constructed as to thrash in the open field, or in bank barns; they can also be removed with ease and placed under the over-shot, and the strap taken through the floor and attached to the machine. In this particular these machines have a great advantage over all others. His work will bo done in the very best manner; and his castings cannot be surpas sed by any in point of durability. (nOUGELASTIBIA,SPITTING OF BLOOD. of Sixty Years Standiug,, cuaxu by Dr. Jayna's Expectorant: PHILADELPHIA, August 16th, 1838. Mr. ATKINSON—Dear Sir: A few weeks ago I noticed in your paper, an account of the Burin!. sing effects of Jayne's Carminative, in restoring a groat number of passengers on board a Missis sippi steamboat, to perfect health who were affec ted with Bowel Complaint. I was glad to sod YOU notice it so kindly; you may rest assured it deserves the prelim bestowed upon it. The ben efit I have received from this medicine, more es pecially his Expectorant, induces mo to state my case to you.for the benefit of those who are dine. tod in the same way. It has boon my misfortune, sir, to labor under a cough and astlimatical op pression, for more than larlf a century. When a soldier in the American camp, in 1778, I, with many others, (owing to great exposure,) had a violent attack of disease of the Lungs,by which I was disabled from duty for along time. Since that period until recently, I have never boon free from a violent Cough and difficulty of breathing. Year after year I have expectorated over a gill a day; often niuch more, and sometimes mixed with blood. For months together, night after night, I have had to sit or be bolstered up to ob tain my breath:filo weakness and debility eau. sod by such constant expectoration, frequently brought me to astute borderinqon death. It has been a matter of astonishment to my family and friends that lam here to write this to yod. I have had skilful physicians to attend me, and every thing done that was thought likely to give mo relief, without any beneficial effect. Last winter I had another severe attack of Inflame tiou of the Lungs, which I fully expected would be the last. I then considered my case as past the aid of medicine, when I was persuaded to call on Doctor Jayne. With the assistance of Divine Providence, through him,l was once more mind from my bed, but the coughing and wheezing wearied me day and night. Ho advised mo to use his Expectorant. 1 did so, with a strong hope that, as it had cured many of my acquaintances of various diseases of the Lu , tgs, it might at least mitigate my sufferings. Need I say how gratifi ed I telt? It has EFFECTUALLY CURED me. As soon as I commenced taking it, I found it reach ed my case, and I began to breathe with morn freedom. My expectoration became more easy, and my cough ontiroly left me. I now feel an well as ever I did in my life, and am better than I have been for the last SIXTY TEARS. Lastsum. mer I spit a groat deal of blood; now, thank God, lam perfectly cured Now, Sir, after suffering so long, and finding at last such signal relief from Jayne's Expectorant, I feel anxious to inform my follow citizens where relief may be had.
