'Wining of Speech
A lecture recently delivered in Carlisle, Eng
land, by the Rev. A 'Mersa, contained the fol
lowing amusing but instructive - passage: The
point to which I have next to direct attention is
manliness of speech There are many young
men who seem to consider essential to manliness,
that they should be masters of slang The spott
ing world, like its brother, the swell mob, has a
language of its own; but this dog. English extends
far beyond the sporting world It comes with
its hordes of barbarous word•, threatening the
entire extinction of genuine English Now just
listen a moment to our fast young man, or the
_ape of a fast young man, who thinks that to be a
man he must talk iu the dark phraseolocy of
slang If he does anything on his own respousi.

deal of this slang is harmless; many of the terms
are, I think very expressive;-yet there is much
in slang that is objectionable. For example,
Archdeacon flare observes in one of his sermon , ,
the word 'governor,' as applie I to a father, is to
be reprehended I have hea;d a young man call
his father the relieving officer Does it not be

ranee of the paternal and filial relationships, or
great coutewpc for them? Their father is to such
young men merely the representative of authori
ty Innocently enough the expression is used
by thousands of young men who venerate and
love their parents; but only think of it, and I am
sure you will admit that it is a cold, heartless
word when thus applied, and one that ought forth
with to be abandoned
WEALTH OF STATESMEN —Cramer, of the
Daily Wisconsin, and formerly of Albany, pub
lishes the article on the "Wealth of Statesmen,"
now going the rounds of the papers, and adds:—
Silas Wright, with his estate of $4,000, was
really wealthier than many others are with $l. s",•

obligations with the utmost promptness, and
_never indulged in any luxury that he could not

to receive such a favor from any oue—even from
his most esteemed friends---he was elected by the
people to be Governor of the State of New York,
and be considered it his imperative duty to live
OD whatever income the people had appended to
that office, and he did live ou that income while
he was Governor, in good st)le, but with no os
tentation. _ Such an example on the part of so
eminent a man as he was, in one of those prec
ious legacies that the young men i f the present
day should bear in mind—as no true greatness
can ever be achieved so long as they are the pe
cuniary slaves of even their nearest friends
When a public man receives favors that be can
not repay, he loses that sturdy independence .0
essential to usefulness, and an enduring popu•
larity, "Live within your income," is more ini•
portant to one who aims t, be an influential and
useful statesman, than any other maxim.

and striving to exceed us—or she will be knock

admission to the great American Union.
