11 'Wining of Speech A lecture recently delivered in Carlisle, Eng land, by the Rev. A 'Mersa, contained the fol lowing amusing but instructive - passage: The point to which I have next to direct attention is manliness of speech There are many young men who seem to consider essential to manliness, that they should be masters of slang The spott ing world, like its brother, the swell mob, has a language of its own; but this dog. English extends far beyond the sporting world It comes with its hordes of barbarous word•, threatening the entire extinction of genuine English Now just listen a moment to our fast young man, or the _ape of a fast young man, who thinks that to be a man he must talk iu the dark phraseolocy of slang If he does anything on his own respousi. bility, he does it on his own •hook.' If lie see.l anything remarkably good, he ealls it a ‘stuntosr,' the superlative of which is a regular stunt, r if a man is requested to pay a tavern bil he asked if be will 'Stand Saw•" If he weds u sav age looking dog, he calls WAD au 'ugly customer If he meet, an eccentric man, he calls him a 'rum. my old cove scusible wan 1, , a (Map 'that i. up to snuff ' A man not remarkable Ivr g'"'d sense is a ‘cake'—a kW .- -a `st wk . mother des u.•t know lie t• out A doubt fui :assertion is to be 'told to tlie .lit in.-N(llWe siatetuvnt i, 'all anliilll , ll I 411 )..111.1g friend never scolds, but •Llows 1.,y-, but 'stumps up,'—never find• it difficult to p.y, but is 'hard up,' --nevvr feels fatigued, 'used up He ha. no hat, but shelter. 11... i 1 beneath a 'tile lie wear, ue, k vl,Oll, but surrounds his week with a .elloker Ile livesdio where, but awne is 5..111.. p i ne , • V. For example, Archdeacon flare observes in one of his sermon , , the word 'governor,' as applie I to a father, is to be reprehended I have hea;d a young man call his father the relieving officer Does it not be tray on the part of young men great igno, ranee of the paternal and filial relationships, or great coutewpc for them? Their father is to such young men merely the representative of authori ty Innocently enough the expression is used by thousands of young men who venerate and love their parents; but only think of it, and I am sure you will admit that it is a cold, heartless word when thus applied, and one that ought forth with to be abandoned WEALTH OF STATESMEN —Cramer, of the Daily Wisconsin, and formerly of Albany, pub lishes the article on the "Wealth of Statesmen," now going the rounds of the papers, and adds:— Silas Wright, with his estate of $4,000, was really wealthier than many others are with $l. s",• 000. lie owed no man anything ; he met his obligations with the utmost promptness, and _never indulged in any luxury that he could not pay for. He was a model of.repnblicansimplic. 'ity. It should also be understood that ho was not mean in saving money There was some. thing glorious in witnessing a great statesman like Silas Wright, never asking"' pecuniary favor or even accepting one ; ye, possessing only an income that could support him and his wife in frugality. When he was elected Governor of the great State of New York, he was known to be too poor to furnish his house His rich friends got together and without his knowledge made up a subscription which was tendered to him as a gift, in order to furnish his mansion This he respectfully but kindly declined, saying with a true Roman grandeur, that he could not consent to receive such a favor from any oue—even from his most esteemed friends---he was elected by the people to be Governor of the State of New York, and be considered it his imperative duty to live OD whatever income the people had appended to that office, and he did live ou that income while he was Governor, in good st)le, but with no os tentation. _ Such an example on the part of so eminent a man as he was, in one of those prec ious legacies that the young men i f the present day should bear in mind—as no true greatness can ever be achieved so long as they are the pe cuniary slaves of even their nearest friends When a public man receives favors that be can not repay, he loses that sturdy independence .0 essential to usefulness, and an enduring popu• larity, "Live within your income," is more ini• portant to one who aims t, be an influential and useful statesman, than any other maxim. THE FATE t)V THE —The N Sun day Times indulges in the following reflections over the fate of a sister country Poor Mexico' She becomes every day more and more incapable of resisting the political dt ease that is preying upon b.r vitak. Be s et on every side with enemies, sick, disheartened, ex limited, petit/Reba and powerless, she tuust deafly succomb to the dictates of "manifest des. tiny ;" and either "give up the ghost," and al - low her corpse to become the property of resur rectionists, or else call on cur government, as the physician general to the American continent, for advice and assistance Whichovr course she may adopt, • grand sensation among the"fauoily of nations" will be the consequence The Euro peen powerswould not permit us to ale.orb a territory "so valuable without emphatically , 1 pressing their disapprobation and un e a s ine ss , nor could we witness its transfer to European protectorateism without romething more than a protest. Mexico is a &mu, bouch. over which all the national mouths water, as that of Russia over the inviting dominions of the Tur ooman. But who shall snap it up—alliu swal low and digest i4Y We are afraid, and Europe dare not ! In such a dilemma our sister repubi lie bids fair to become the victim of the fillibus ter. We can imagine no other fate as awaiting her. The moment her various contending fac tions have played the Kilkenny est drama to ntion, Walker, Kinney, and a host of simi pirits, will "colonize," without hazarding even a blow for the extension of the "area of freedom." In a few years after, Mexico will either be an Anglo Saxon rival of our own—she will either be another young and vigorous nation, starting in the grand race of prosperity beside, and striving to exceed us—or she will be knock ing et our door, as Texas did of old, asking fur admission to the great American Union.
