4 "TREATMENT OF CHOLERA. We have already published an account of the highly successful treatment of tbe cholera and of the remedies employed by Dr. Hamlin, of Constantinople, and other missionaries, during the prevalence of the disease in Turkey last season. Dr. Pratt, of the Central 'Turkey Mission of the American Board, has prepared for publi cation in the Missionary Herald the fol lowing account of that treatment, which v.-o copy for the benefit of our readers who may have occasion to apply or to rec ommend it. Every one should have some each remedies at hand either for himself or for others who may be attacked: STJHTO:.IS OF THE DISEASE. Cholera is a disease of the stomach and intestine?, manifested by purging and vomiting-, and running, sooner or later, in to discharges like water with rice boiled ia it. This is the essential nature of the disease, no mutter where it appears. When it comes as an epidemic, commonly called ''Asiatic cholera, " there co-exists, to p greater or less degree, what is called inalignanc-, manifested by coldness of the surface of the body, depressed pulse, purple, shriveled appearance of extremities, and perhaps spasm. It is this quality that is the source of danger, and it may vary in intensity from the slightest to the most virulent decree, causing death in three hours, and before the purging and vomiting have had time, of themselves, to produce any effect. TREATMENT. To ir.cc-t these conditions, the following directions must be carefully followed : 1. For the Huge of diarrhaa. This may coiue on insidiously, painless, and hence not alarming, but should hi met promptly. The remedy is, " the cholera mixture,' so called, consisting of equal parts of Laudanum, Tincture of Rhubarb, and Spirits of Camphor. Ht'gin with 30 drops, taken clear and unmixed, with a little sugar placed in the Tnouth afterwards. Repeat the dose after every evacuation, increasing it if the case becorr.es urgent to CO drops (a teaspoon f il), or 90 drops, jf necessary. If ihe dlurrliira is not controlled by this means, an injection of from oi to 90 drops of ! laudanum, in a teiispoonf.il of starch, will j prove a vaiuaoie ne.p. inis may ue onen rcpea:;l. it llie diarilioea ceases, do noi entirely intermit the medicine, but give in gradually diminished doses, every one or (wo iiours, for a period of twelve or even twenty-four hours. 2. For the venting stage, the- best reme dy ii Laudanum, Tincture of Capsicum, Tincture of Ginger, and i Tincture of C:trdamon seeds, j equal parts : to be given, from 40 to CO j drops, undilatcd and followed by sugar, j nfter every fit of vomiting; taking care to give it as soon as the lit ceases, when it j will he more likc-ly to be retailed. An ! excellent adjuvant to this is a large mus- ! tard poultice to the abdomen. 3. I'br tc start? of wdignannr, the only remedy is yfiwuuifs, especially brandy, which must be given with great freedom, from two to four teaspoonfuls every, half or even quarter hour, till heat returns, nnd pulse and sensibilitj- of extremities are restored. It is always to be given undi luted. Alcohol, or other spirits, will an swer the purpose, if brandy is not to be had. It will be necessary to combine 'vith this, artificial heat, bottles of hot water to the body and extremities, fric tions of the limbs, (which no one need fear to apply,) and mustard, perhaps, to the feet and hands, stomach and limbs. Remember that holdiwss, to the verge of rashness, is better than excess of caution, and that no danger is to be apprehended from any of these remedies so long as the symptoms for which they are given are uncontrolled. The use of cold water must be strictly forbidden, except merely to gargle the thmat ; a very small quantity, swallowed, will bring on the diarrhoea after it has been stopped for hours. A little water of gum arabic may be sdlowed, a teaspoon fiil at a time ; or perhaps, lumps of ice might be taken with safety. For the typhoid fever, which often follows an attack, chamomile or sage tae, and odiaphoretic treatment, will be all that is needed, besides a moderate usa of stimu lants, for convalescence. C2 A Neguo in Accomac county, Va. , a few days ago went to the residence of a Captain Drummond, and not finding him at home, killed Mrs. Drummond and a servant woman, and plundered the house, carrying off fifteen hundred dollars 5n greenbacks. The citizens of the coun ty immediately turned out, scoured the country around, and finally arrested the vriminnl. lie was at once hung up on on adjacent tree. General Cass, now at his residence in Detroit, is gradually sinking, and his friends thiuk he cannot live much longer, lie is in the tighty-fouith year of his age. His diseasa is softening of the brain, from years of labor in his country's ser vice, lie passes most of his time in sleep, and is but seldom able to converse ration ally with his family. The Crawford county National Hank, of MeadviRe, Pa., and the Venango Na tional Bank of Pa., are the only ones eeriously affected bv the failure of Culver, Penn A- Co., of New York. To the Public.
