1 1 'It ! ft Proclamation by Governor Cnrttn- A fcall for 154,000 Men for 10O Days. II.KKI:jiiri;, July 5, 1SG4. Pennsylvania, ss: A. G. Cruris : In the name and by the authority of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Andrew (J. Curtin, Gover nor of suid Commonwealth. A l'KOCl.AM A TIoN. H'iikkkas, The I 'resident of the I'nited States has this day made a call ujkjii the Commonwealth of l'cimsylvania for twelve thousand (Il',000) militia as vol unteer infantry, to serve at Washington and its vicinity for one hundred days, un less sooner discharged. I, Andrew G. Curtin, Governor of the Kiid Commonwealth, da make this, my proclamation, in response thereto, and do hereby call on the freemen, of the Penn sylvania militia to come promtly forward, as they have heretofore done, and till the requisition for the important servico. It is apparent that the enemy of our Gov ernment, in desperation, are threatening ii3 with an armed force, in the hope that the army of Gen. Grant may be with drawn from before h'ichmond, and I call upon the citizens of the Commonwealth, capable of bearing arms, to come forward without delay, and thus aid our heroic brothers, in the great Army of the He public. Given under my hand and the great seal of the State at Ilarrisburg this oth day of July, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and t-ixty-four, and of the Commonwealtli the eighty-ninth. By the Governor: KM SLIFEII, Secretary of the Commonwealth. Sacrifices of tlie lIlsli Ladies. Patriotic ladies of Poland finding that renewed sacrifices were necessary in the war with Russia have sent their jewels to England for sale, the proceeds to be de voted to the relief of those poor si. k and wounded Poles who now, almost bereft of hope, are slowly languishing in secrecy and suffering. T he jewels were sold at Cheswick Mansion of the Dowager Duch ess of Sutherland. They numbered about 7U0, and were valued -it .o.0i).". The number would have been greater hud it not been for the difficulty found in re moving Jhem. As it is, many valuable articles weiv confiscated on the Austrian frontier, and never reached Kngland. Among the jewelry sold was a large collection of wedding rings and love tokens belonging to Poli.-h women who had ht their husbands during thi insurrection, and who did not hesitate to sacrifice th s. relics in the hope that the amount obtain ed for them would lessen the suifering of those who hud struggled and bled in the cause for which their husbands had fall n. Many of these rings ln.re 1 1 1 joint initials of husband and wife, and some of them were also engraved with appropriate mot toes and quotations. There were also four bead necklaces sent by the nuns who, having nothing else to offer, had given up the only ornaments they were crmittod to use. In one of the galleries were two beautiful shawls valued at fifty guineas each, and iu the room known as" the Fox Room, adjoining the small chamber in iu which the great English statesnan died, were two fine oil paiut'ngs, tin property of Polish families, which were otfeivd at the price of ,00) each. Among the miscellaneous articles for sale were three silver snuff boxes, which had been sent by Russians with a view of benefitting their oppressed fellow subject.'. Som ? of the rings bore dates which showed thev had been worn in some cases fifiv, in others but two or three years. The sales were at exceedingly low prices, the love tokens and rings going often for only a few shillings. As Origixai. Lcthj: i'K"-i a Qcakku to a Watciimaki:r. licnl John : I have once more sent my erroneous watch, which wants thy friendly care and correc tion: the last time it was at thy school, it was no ways benefitted by thv instruc tions. I find by the index of his tongue he is a liar, and that his motions are wa vering and unsettled ; which makes me Itelievc he is not right in the inward man I mean the mainspring. I would have thee prove and try him with thv adjusting tool of truth, that, if possible, "thou niay cst drive him from the errors of his ways, imagining his body to be foul, and the whole mass corrupted; purge him wilu thy cleansing stick from all potation, so that he may vibrate and circulate accord ing to thy truth. I will board him with thee a few davs, and pay thee for his board when thou re quirest it. Friend, when thou correctest him, do it without passion, lest by severity thou drivest him to destruction. I would have the let him visit the sun's motions, and teach him his true calculation table and equation; and when thou fin dot him con formable to thai, send him home with a just bill of moderation, aad t shall be faithfully remitted to thro bv thy true friend, Oii.uh vii Pi m.
