u "1 5 1J-.J. -T 4 By consnitation with your friend Mr. Qarriron, of Botton, I learned thut bo had been laboring for years to overthrow the government, . and Mill had at tho head of his newspaper the motto, The Constitu tion league with Hell" which, he in formed mc, was a stem; but if he could get the people of America to believe that the founder of the Kepublic were in the fellowship of Your Majesty, it would be all right. He made issue on the question of slavery, which exists only in the South em Stair, and had well nigh brought matters to a climax in 1 850. when an old fool named Webster, from Boston, said, The Constitution found slavery among a?, it recognized it, and gave it solemn g-jamntie and argued that the people ould not conscientiously disregard these pledges. (What he meant by thi?, I can not My, as conscience is indefinable known only to the followers of your Enemy. However, it had a great eSect with the people.) This Webster, and a fellow named Clay, by great exertions, succee ded ia cementing the Union as firmly as before. The eiforts of Messrs. Garrison, Phillips & Co., having failed, the country went on in the even tenor cf its way. I perceived at once that the plan of your well-wishers was excellent that it was the only way ia which we could succeed. I immediately commenced tho organiza tion of Abolition Aid Societies ; whispered in the ears of a politician named Giddings i -a- . " ana one namea lovejoy ooin your par ticular friends to counsel the people to steal ail the negroes they could, and to re sist the Fugitive Slave Law a part of ths Constitution. - Also, with very little effort, I succeed id in inducing popular preachers of the Gospel to preach, instead of " Christ and him crucified," the "Slave holder and him be damned." I proceeded immediately to New York city, and had a conference with our worthy Horace, and urged tha necessity of tending fome eniifcaric to Kansa?, a territory then about to be admitted into the Union as a S'atc. Horace was delighted. ' Cer tainly," said he, " I am in on that. The column of my paper are at your service, and Til and Jim Iicdpath to Kansas as our spocial cyrreapondent. You know Jim ia good at getting up a lie, and can picture the imaginary outrages in glowing colors." This ready acquiescence of Horace should not be forgotten, nnd, in .return for hia valuable services, I hope Your Majesty will see that he is furnished with comfortable apartments when he ' shuffles oiFthe morlal coil." As was anticipated, this programme caused the most intense excitement . throughout the whole country. The con servatives endeavored to qu?ll the storm, and maintained that the South should have their rights that every State should regulate its own domestic affair? that riavery could not be interfered with, &c. The people of the South met the matter boldly, bir.g determined to stand up for their interests. They alao sent emigrants to Kan?.a, for the purpose of planting slavery there. They contended that the Northerner and Southerner should both jro to the Territory with their property, and that when the people formed a S:atr Con- tion, it wu deemed advisablo to givo him the contract of inaugurating Mr. Seward's idea of on irrepressible conflict." lie was eager for the'task, and, after being furnished with arms, ammunition and men, he made a raid upon Ilnr-ier'a Ferry, for the pur-jose- of setting the negroes five. Although he did not succeed very well, his efforts produced the most intense ex citement. It was as a match to a train of powder. Of course we denied having any connection with the matter, and thus escaped punishment, but old lirown was caught aud hung. He died like a hero. A3 he is in your dominions, and can com municate personally with Your Majesty, it is unnecessary for me to enter into a history of the case. John did well, and dj try and give liim as cool a cell as possible. The Harper's Ferry aflair did much towards dissolving the Union. But a few more straws were needed and the back of the camel would have been broken. One Mr. Helper had been chased out of California for forgery and came to my embraeci-. Seeing tliat he was rather in telligent and willing for any service, I told him to write a book, and in proportion to the amount cf blackguardism, abuc of the South and general misrepresentation contained therein, would be his pay. He commenced, and in d'ie time the work appeared, entitled the "Impending Crisis." It was a perfect success, and I hope I may be pardoned for saying that it was a work worthy of Your Majesty. "We contended that the Southerners Congress, who " understood the and told them thev must indorse this book and recommend it for general circulation. Two or three of the members objected ; thereupon the faithful set up a tremendous howl of 'disapproval. Therefore, a'd signed ir sixty-nine members of the Con gress cf the United States. Another " good lick." The time for the nomination of another candidate for President had now arrived, and we centered on Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois a man well suited fur the posi tion, as the greater part of his life had baen spent in splitting rait. We went into the contest boldly. Making tools of Win. L. Yancey and o.hr Southern lead ers, I succeeded in dividing the Demo cratic party thus making our chance sure. We boldly proclaimed our princi ples "m union with slaveholders" "' slaveholders are a nuisance ; wc must abolish all nuisances" " slave-holding is the sum of all viilanies" slaveholders are more criminal than common murder ers" "Congress has exclusive jurisdic tion over the question of slavery in the territories it is the duty of Congress to abolish slavery." " The Constitution is a league with hell" "A Higher Law." " Down with Southern aristocracy up with negro equality." In this manner we preached, and Mr. Lincoln was elected. Being pledged to carry out the ideas of his party, the eo ple of the South became alarmed, nnd at the suggestion of a few political dema gogues, withdrew from the Union. This was another point gained. In order to li'tp t'iem out, I urged "our boys" to fight rather than compromise and so a war has bc.cn going on for two years, :;n J as yet no prospects of settlement. On the rirst of January, at my suggestion, Mr. IJncoIn issued a proclamation declaring all the slaves in the Sonlli fne. There can now la no hone of a reunion. all cut-threat? were , while, "our men" were all innocence (confidentially, they were se lected from the greatest rascals in the country.) President Pierce, by Lis con servative course, diJ much harm to our cause, jet the seeds of discord were plan ted and gave promise of a good yield. The year 185G had arrived the great period for which we had been so long preparing. A new President was to le elected, and I deemed this a propitious moment for the new party which we had formed to take a bold stand. Accordingly I proposed the matter to the representa tive men of You Majesty's ideas, an J they assembled at Philadelphia and there nominated John C. Fremont the chap to whom you gave the gold mines. He furnished the money we. did the wire pulling and talking. We raided a banner having a star" for each free State. We boldly proclaimed disunion, rather than live with slaveholders. Mr. Fremont was r.ot elected, but received a verv re spectable vote. Jame.4 Buchanan was chosca i 'resident by a large majority. Hi took Lis scat, a:;d the country again settled down to lis wonted quietude. I began t despair, and v. as about to retire from tlie contest, but your boys all said "try again!" I -ratted them on the shoulder kindly, and told them to go to work. Mr. Seward, one of your adroitest agents, announced to ihc- public that there was an " irrepressible oonr.ict" going on between freedom and slav--ry ; but he was sharp enough not to mention any names, OKI Abe contended, after the manner of the Bible, which you know is a favorite book with the pj-ople, thiU, " A house di vided against itself cannot sta d this country must become all five or all slave." Abe worked hard ; and very properly has received his reward. 1 h:ive the honor of announcing that he : now President of tho United States.
