Tlie Tonnage Tax. ; A bill has recently been introduced into ! the Legislature, to restore the tax on the tonnage cf the Pennsylvania Rail Road which was commuted last winter. We hope : the bill will become a law before the close . of the present session. At the present ; time, when we are likely to become tin- : piratically a tax riduea peoi le, and whe.i the poor Cian is even taxed heavily for his : two great luxuiies, tta and cofi'ee. it is cer- j taitily right that such wealthy corporations : as the Pennsylvania Rail Road company ; should be compelled to bear their share f the burthen of supporting the Government. : Our readers will recollect, that this was one of the very fctv country newspapers. ; which opposed the repeal of the tonnage ; tax by the Legislature last winter. For do- j ing so, we encountered not a little censure 1 from open enemies and pretended friends. '. We were accused with or posing the l est interests f our county and State, and with being actuated by unreasonable prejudice ' against the company. 77 e felt confident at the time, however, that those who honestly : advocated the measure as wise and judicious : would soon pet their eyes open. And thio ', has been the cass, for just now, many who 1 were the staunched advocates rf 'Repeal' are now the loudest ;u urging the restcra tion of the tax. What benefits have the people of I'ci.r.- , fvlvar.ia derived fr-in the commutation the ti nnae tax ? Has the company sine then discriminated in f..v r tf way freight? Has the rate of freight been perceptibly re- ( duced, or has it not rather leen increased ? , have n-t many of those engaged in exporting ' Eastward, articles from this county, encoun tered frequently, anurying and embarras- j sing delays in forwarding tl eir articles or nierehitiid't.-o over tho road ? All of thesv 1 questions we confidently answer in the af- j firmative. The great or rathf r the only j object of the company, seems to be to make ! motley . without taking the trouble of pan- J si .i g to consider whether its policy is lK-ne- j fitting or injuring the communities through wldrh its road passes. In this it is J but act uate-1 by a spirit, common to all : mammoth corporations. They have, as Sir j Edward Coke gravely informs us. no souls, j and have therefore, no interests or sviupa tides in common with th great mas of the j community. In them is more thoroughly ' illu.-trated than elsewhere, 'the oppressor's ; wrong, the proud man's contumely.' that contempt of public censure ; that spirit of tyranny and oppression, which immense wealth alone can give. It is an extraordi nary thing, to see a corporation, the special pat and favorite of the people of Pennsylva- burning, and ttiih this "ease in point.' nia. But in sayitfg thi- we go too fir. It j staring them in the face, we cannot conceive Eevcr has been a favori .e with the citizens, how our editorial brethern dare find fault the tax payers of this State. Put its nmn- ! with great peop e. for enj ying themselves ey made it a pet and favorite with a ma-. nd makins merry, while civil war desolates jority of the members of the I egslature the land.
