tnloial rood and Bread. A paper was recently read before the Lon don Chemical Society by Dr Gilbert, on the eSUlDOBlUOli ot tbs animal portion 01 nunian . ... It supplied in the food, despite the foss inca. in the maintenance of the respiratory tunc- tions Hence tb.2 comparative value of fat- j " tl1(.r to the ectng foods was proportional rather to tne mounts of respiratory than of assumed ficsu- forming constituents. It was caicuiaceu ... in those portions of the carcasseB of oxen ac Uaily consumed as human food, the amount cf dry fat was from two to three times as great s the amount of dry nitrogenous matter; and m . 4 I. It - I substituting for th above proportions of fat, their respiratory equivalents in starch, so as to allow of a comparison between meat and bread, the ratios become six or seven to one and eleven to one respectively. From vari ous determinations made by a number of ex perimenters, it appeared that in wheat bread tha ratio cf starchy to nitrogenous matter was sir or seven to one; so that in bread the pro portion of animal flesh-forming constituents was greater than the eaten portions of sheep ar.d piga. and quite equal to that of the eaten portions of oxen a conclusion altogether op posed to the prevalent notions on the subject. Coal lor Uoss. The well known Mr. Mechi, ofTiptree Hal!, has discovered thrt "pigf are very fond f .ftl ahes or cinders " and that "they can hardly be fatencd on boarded floors without j J , I ffivin" them a moderate supply daily, or oc- j t JltM Ae. he ! t;iuiuu i jr w- - w j would give "burned clay or brick-dust. He would "leave to science to explain the cause of this want " Probably many farmers have noticed that hogs which are kept in close pens and fed on very nutritious food; have an ap petite for carbonaceous matter, particularly for charcoal. If they cannot get this, thy will eat decayed wood, straw or hay, peaty earth, atone coal or coal ashes. Even poul try of all kinds, while confined and fed with grain, will eat considerable charcoal, if put tuto cuch condition that they can swallow it Those who Lave obstrved the effect of char coal on thess animals, know that it promotes their health and thrift. Precbely how it Soea this, it is not to easy to explain, fully, ! tepecially tomaeh. Is it not r-robable that this sab- ftanca produces a similar effect on the lower rlTr-,r' Anntlirr adrarif mav b the dis i tension of the intestine?, which are liable to become too contracted, and sluggish in their action, whea the animal i fed wholly on con centrated food. But if farmers will give their hogs charcoal, which in most parts of the country can be readily obtained, they need Dot trouble theBelvcs to get stone-coal cin dcra or brick dust for them. Ldme and Wheat. George II. Chase, an eUerprising young farmer of Union Spring, N. Y., has tried an experiment the present season with salt, ashes and lime, on wheat. An acre each was select ed for the three experiments. About two barrels of salt were applied to one, two two horse load of ashes to a second, and a hun dred bushels of lime to the third acre The resalt has not been measured as yet, but the effects of each are visible The 6alt proved least useful; the ashes more eo;and the lime moat so of all. The" line of superiority mark ing the bounderics of the limed portion was as distinct as a lice fence. The increase of the crop by liming, over the portion not dres sed vrltb anything, is at least ten bushels per acre. The question occurs whether a smaller quantity of lime would not have produced an equal result. This will receive tha test of another trial The laud is a stronger or clay ey loam; and, what is worthy of notice, is in the midst of a limestone region, where the countrj is underlaid by the rocks of the cor niferious limestone:, which is abundantly scat tered over the surface. But acids do not show carbonate of lime in the surface soil. Coun try Gentleman.. Preserving LTamt. Take slacked lime, say a peck or half bushel, (according to the number of hams.) mix the lime with water, and boil in an iron vessel, the same as you would for whitewashing; let it boil as thick as for whitewashing, and when cold, have your Lams laid with the skin down npon placks; then take a brush, (the same as for white washing.) and lay a good coat upon tbe part nnpratected by the skio; let this dry, hang up your meat, and you have sweet bams, free from lugs and Ekippers. if done in time. Intermittent Fevers Pimples vu the Face, In cases of General Debil ty, whether the re sult of acute disease, or of the continued dimi nution of nervous and muscular energy from Chronic complaints one trial of this restorative has proved tuccessful to an extent which no description nor written attestation would render credible. Invalids ro long bed-ridden as to have become forgotton n their own neighboi hoods, have suddenly re-appeared in the busy world as if jut returned from a protracted travel in a distant land. Some very signal instances of this kind are attested of female SnUerers, emaciated victims of apparent marasmus, sanguineous ?x bustion, critical changes, and that complication of nervous and dyspeptic aversion to air and exercise for which the physician has no name. In Nervous Affections of all kinds, and for reasons familiar to Medical men, the operation of this preparation of Iron must necessarily be salutary, for, unlike the old oxides, it is vigor ously tonic, without being exciting and over heating, aud gently, regularly aperient, even in the most obstinate cases of costiveness without ever being a gastric purgative or inflicting a dis agreeable sensation. It is this latter property, among others which Kake-j it so remarkably efleetual and permanent a'remedy for files, upon which it also appears to exert a distinct and speciao wtinq, by riir, by dis persing the local tendency which forms them.
