1 fcb'ockln? Ibbiifaaluftf tSr of aFatlier to bis Child One of ibe most shocking casc inhumanity af father to his child that'has ever come un jer our notice, was brought to light in the borough of Indiana last week. It appears that man f named J. C. Stochal was put on trial 'there for assault and battery upon his gdn, a child of some eight years. . The evi dence was very voluminous, ,aud revealed a gvstetn of brutal treatment on the part of the fauer, of which the chili was. the victim, the details of which beyond anything of the lini we haveevr read.- It was hown that he hung the child,-on one occasion,;, to.a joist by r(,Pe f8611 to ts thumbs, "rand that while in tnis position he compelled a younger brother to kindle a fire beneaib. him, so that he was almost roasted to deah before be was taken dawn. "'.'.-' On another occasion he. laid him on heated store, and subsequently compelled .him to itand on the same' .without either shoes or stockings to protect bis feet from the heated metal ' The child, when produced in Court, was terribly disfigured, and bore upon his 'delicate 'person abundant marks of the brutal ity to which he had been, subjected. The .jury found the prisoner guilty, but inasmuch as he had been convicted of larceny a short ime before? and got fifteen months impris onmnent in the Penitentiary, judgement was guspended. ; - ' , l i The entire -case-is one of the most extraor dinary, ami. revolting :that we- have read, of for bears; and; shows the accused to be one Jof the most unmitigated monsters that has ever disgraced the-name of father among The Japanese Emhassy Coming. From the Kauaawa .correspondence of ihe Alta Califumian, ce learn that arrangements for the visit of the Japanese Embassy to Wash ington have been completed, and that they will leave Seddo on tke 22 J of February, Washington's birthday, for the capitol, via. Panama. Our Consul, Mr.JIIarris. it seems, was nio$ anxious that they should start at an, earlier date, in;..order to arrive here while Congress was in session, thinking, no doubt, that the most - extraordinary and iuteresting sibt Uief-e distinguished strangers could be hold would .b one of the delectable scenes so common; i -Congress. Mr. Harris has been obliged o obtain a repeal of the law prohibi ting Japanese.subjccts from leaving the king dom, in order to effect this diplomatic mission the accomplishment of which is quite an im portant event. The embassy will consist of wventy persons, aiM will uo doubt .attract a gat deal of attention here. Another.Jeto. It has .heretofore been sta ted that Governor Stewart, "of Missouri, had re&ised to sign the bill passed by it Legisla ture, for the exclusion of the free colored pop u'a'iou from the State. It appears that Gov. Perry, of Florida, has alsodeclined to sign a bill of a like character excluding the same class of personal from Florida. SPECIAL. XOTICES. Worms. Three Horses were sold for $342 50, and two others bought for $185 00. Fully one half of the Flour, Groceries and Vege tables used in the house is consumed in the In sane Department. Some idea of the expenses of this bran:h of the Institution will be had when it is known that during the year past 1460 gal lons of Vegetable Soup, the same amount of Gotlee and 7500 pounds of Bread were used by the Insane alone. No Meat is allowed them, ex perience having shows that its - effect is unfavor able. .The arrangements for keeping the Insane is defective for two reasons, first too close con finement during bad weather, the women, of whom there are thirteen, are all kept in one room, when the weather permits they spend the day in a grassy yard sixty feet square. The men a retreated in a similar mannar. at the opposite end f the house, of .course those wlio might ha benefitted, suffer by the association; secondly, in-J sufficient assistance to attend them. Y e have one young woman to attend, the insane women to whom we pay $1,50 jer week, the Steward cr whoever he may find capable among the inmates attends the men. More assistance would pro mote better treatment. There is but little im provement, and as several of the insane were for years in the State Hospital without any improve ment, there is not much hope for them to le re stored here.. Daring the year two improved so far as to be allowed to leave, and one so as to be of some use in the house. Cleanliness, the use of j the shower bath exercise and diet are the means used for thfcir alleviation, and it cannot be said ! that our Kucces h.s been veo gratifying. I t;ike this opportunity of returning my thanks to the differcut imisical associations who have visi- ; ted the house during the year for the diversion of the innwJes of al) classes. Under the protection of a merciful Providence the inmates have been remarkably l;en!tln but few died, and those wvre mostly chronic cases, whose termination was only a question of lin e.
