i 4 Ploughing by Mm. Illinois appears to be takiug the leal of rthcr elates in agricultural progrcssneness. A priza of iJO.otJ has been placed at thj tlisposal of ita iftatc Agricultural Society for the best steam plow, and from a circular .nt us, we learn that a company has been lornied in the city of Chicago, with a capital .f o0,O00, for introducing into practical .jso, the traction locowotivo rotary tiller of Tils. Kiddy. This subject is by no means a new one, nMvjttJgh btit little attention has been given to it cntil within two or three years past. We will endeavor to present some itifoma- lion, f-nowing what nas zircaay octu uuc by other; to that the grotrnd may be better tinders tood than it now is. KnglauiJ has been tLo experimental farm Tor steam ploughing, efforts having been uiade twenty-seven years ago to reclaim.and cultivate Chat Moss by steam machinery. An engins stationed at one end of a plot of laud, was employed to drag plows through the soil by means of rones parsing over the l:im of a win ilass. With somo modifica tions of machinery, this system appears to Lo the most successful taat.has yet been attempted. The person who has done most to render ploughing by steam, in England, 3 economical in cultivating land as animal power, is Mr. John Fowler, an anricultural engineer, who has expended no less than J 100,000 for this Mil, and they appear well adapted for this purpose. Every American t team plow that has yet been brought before the puWic embraces the locomotive principle of the engine moving over the cctirc field, dragging a set of ploughs, which is quite different in its nature from Fowler's, the one which has been most successful in Europe. The engiuc used for operating a eteatu plough ktiouM also oe capaoie oi oeiug iuucu w i li t. 1 II- rl - i threshiu?, inudin and other operati - and other operations of a farm, as noo of our farmers can well afford to keep an engine for ploughing exclusively. In hilly countries the bteaui plough will never be able to supplant horses ; but in such state as Illinois, where the farms are very large, the soil mellow, and the fields nearly level, and where fuel is abundant, the steam plough appears to be invited to success. Okitnttic America a. Tranwplautlu?, r.aty, af and Pre Utakl. We wih to impress upon the readers of the Agricultural that it is a very simple and tsfe operation to transplant everything that irowd, It is just as easy to transplant corn a cabbage plants, and this in the middle of the hottest day ; ana it m profitable also. Take an example. Here is a corn held plant ed in rows and hills three by four feet, which allows 3,030 hills to the acre. Estimating the yield on a good soil, with all the hills perfect, at 50 buthels per acre, we have about a pint of corn to the hill Hut suppose we Lave 02 bills (cne ia every 00) deficient, there will then be a loss of one bushel of corn, with no less labor in preparing the ground and in the after cultivation, for tha weeds tboull be hoed down on the vacant r-pots. The vacant hills usualily amount to one ia 15 or 20, taking the whole field toccther. Hut with a trowel, or oUier b'unple implimcnt, a man will readily 11 up sixty hills in sn hour, or two at most, by trans planting from thoso that hivo an excess of plauts. This could be done cn a rainy day, and we doubt whether labor could be mone profitably expend-;! cn the farm, in at leit ooe half of the country, thttn in securing an eitr bushel cf corn by two hours' labor. When the ground is wet it is easy to take a ttowel or piece of ehinla and divide a hill liiug superfluous f hoots, lift out cne side .f the earth with the plan;s, and set them down where needed to fill in. This of course should be done when the plants are small and the roots not yet extended far, us that they may cot be injured in dividing the hill, We have here taken the worst case aud shown its feasibility. In gardens, where higher culture ia practiced, the profit of transplant ing would be much greater. American Ajricvtturit'. lrservln5 Street Xotatc. IM.
