Cultivate and Improve. .Detorioation in. plants and animals, is & possible as improvement. 1 Nations, once re nowned as the perfection of the human race, by neglect Lave sunk into barbarism. Egypt - wa onco so learned, that it is recorded, as a striking mark of her greatness, that Closes, 'was learned in all the wisdom of tbe Egyp tians." fijrypt is now a sessi-barbarcras pro vince cf Turkey, 83 poor that none -do her reverence The Bedouin robber makes bis baunt , where was once tire Alexandrine school, from wbicb has come much of our civilization and science. Tyre, celebrated in Holy Writ for her knowledge in the arts and navigation, Las lost her designation as "Queen of the Sea,' and scarcely a vestage of her greatness, her arts, or her power remains. We might extend. our illustrations of the truth of onr position, at the expense of our pride of human progress, but these will be sufficient. The best breed of animals extant, turned into the wilderness, will soon loose their dis tinctive qualities, and assimilate to the origi nal wild stock. But a few generations are required to change the Berkshire or China, Into the long-nosed, flap-eared wild-hog, from which all our varieties have sprung. So with our fruit Let the best variety of apples known, grow up in the hedge or the woods, and in a short time the descendents will be no better than bitter crabs. We may follow the law of deterioation through the whole vegitable and animal creation, and we shall find it unerring; what ia not progressing is retrograding. Ever? farmer, then, may make up his mind that unless, by his efforts properly directed in taxing nature, he is improving his stock and other products, they will deterioate in his keening If we eat our best and earliest grain, generation after generation, or sell it because the profit is greater, the rich wheat kernel will soon become a shriveled concern. as unlike its ancestors as a crab is to a pip fin. Tho decendants of vegetables, as well as of animals, are the representatives of their ancestors. If consumption, scrofula, or other diseases exist in the pareut, it will appear in the children, and though it may sometimes pass over a whole generation, it is sure to appear in the next. It is so with vegetables; aow peas full of bugs, and you will get bag gy peas ; Bew wheat full of weavil and smut sow shriveled and late ripened wheat, and it will require a miracle to produce a good erop. Ia tho retrograding scale, the descendents r. always worse than the parent. In the human race, avarice in the parent makes a thief of t,he child the principalis inherited, but it is more fully developed. So in all animals and vegetables. The bad traits in the parent are inherited by the offspring, and more fully developed. Deterioation thus goes on in an accelerated ratio, until we can scarcely trace a resemblance to the ancestor Ohio Farmer, GIFTS t GIFTS GIFTS lj Ml YM BF THE HTBHBL Brier Hints for the Garden. Frequent stirring of tho soil, about all growing crops, in the absence of rain, admits the action of the atmosphere, and they enjoy the benefit of the 'dews both most salutary in their effects. Mulching trees transplanted this spring, also tomato plants, as well as strawberry beds recently set up, is highly to be commended. Wood ashes liberally sown under large trees where the grass has disappeared will speedily produco white clover and other grasses. The white and yellow turnip-rooted radish nhould follow the early red, which will net Stand the hot .suns of summer; Peas, bunch beans, spinach, beets, corn, &c, should be sown at intervals of two weeks, during the season, for a constant sup ply for the table market. Until out of danger, sprinkle the cucum ber, squash, and uiellon plants, thrice a week with wood asbes, early in the morning when the dew is on, to protect them against insect dopvxlk4M. j. Carefully tie up the rose and other flower ing plants and shrubs requiring it In an other place wire supports are greatly recom mended. In replanting corn that has failed, let it soak for three or four hours in rich manure water, and then roll in plaster. It will - sprout in nearly half the time of other seed not steeped properly, and give strong plants. Currants, gooseberries, blackberries, and raspberries, should bo mulched with leaves or light stable manure, regularly trice a year, It will not only keep down the weeds the great enemy of these fruits but it will create a fine, rich loam, and affords abundant crops. For garden walks there is no material, in our judgement to compare to coal ashes. If the walk or allies are dug out six inches and filled up with these ashes, and rolled, it will not only act as a drain to the alley, but to the adjosning beds. In the wettest weath er and in all seasons, these walks are in good condition. If but twenty or thirty yards a year are made in this wav, in a few years the whole garden will have these admiral paths ; and after that they can be topdresecd every spring with the accumulated ashes, during winter, and then rolled. Ger. Tel. TOJIATOES. The followiog method of preparins tomat- toes for the table, we are assured by one who has tried the experiment, is superior to any thing yet discovered for the preperation of mat excellent vegetable : Take good ripe tomatoes, cut them in sli ces, and sprinkle over them finely pulverized white sugar, then add claret wine sufficiently to cover them. Tomatoes are sometimes pre pared in this way with diluted vinegar, but the claret wine imparts to them a richer and more pleasant flavor, more nearly resembling uig suanuciijf mail unyming fcise. SALT. .. The application of two to four hundred pounds of salt to the acre has been found to be ofgreat advantage in promoting the growth of all plants and trees. Warm soils of the Inl . h .4;a;. i ' . , - - '"nuns, uuu cspcciauj loose mat nave been dressed liberally with animal manure, are tne most benefited. A dressing of salt upon a grass lawn will often increase growth and thicken-up the plants more than a coat ing ox animai manure. THE ORIGINAL GIFT BOOK TTORE. N D. W. EVANS & CO.
