FIFTH YEAR J Illi LllilLUlUlOL American Agriculture. It ia a melancholy truth and one that re flects much on the skill and foresight of American farmers, that while the wheat crop of England has increased at least fifty per cent, in the last century, that of the United States ha fallen off in nearly the same pro portion. A century ago, New England, Delaware and Virginia raised wheat a3 an ordinary crop; now a wheat field ia a rarity in these states, ana tney may ue consiuereu no longer wheat producing regions. Portions of New York, that formerly produced thirty bushels to the acre, now seldom average over ight bushels, and Ohio, new as she is, with her virgin soil, does not average over thir t en bushels t the acre. If wc go on a3 we have for the past cen tury, from bad to worse iu cur tillage, the lands iu Ohio, in half a century from this time, we ' will not produce wheat enough to pupply our wants. It is less than tbattime eiucc Vermont was a large wheat exporting etate; now hhe does not export a buthel. but imports at least two-thirds of all the flour consumed in that state. Instead of increasing the productiveness of our wheal land, as iu England, our wheat region is diminished more than one-half, and the productive qual ity of what is still used has diminished in canal Dronortion. This is nractical. matter-of-fact view of the case, and cne that addresses itself seri ouslv to the common 6ense of the farmer and national economist. Instead of all vain boast that we can feed all Europe from our sur plus wheat, we have got to improve our farming, or swallow the unpalatable truth that we import our bread-stuffs from Eng land. We talk much of the worcout-lands of Maryland; Virginia, and California; but New York, that has destroyed the productive qual ity of her soil, so that she can get but eight bushels where she formerly got thirty, and Ohio; so she gets but thirteen bushels where ehe .formerly got thirty five, 1 ave the satr.o prospects before them. The great question regards the future; the past cannot be re called, nor remedied. One great source of deterioration in ex hausting our soils, has been ia the manufac ture of potash, and the export of it to foreign countries, or to our manufactories. In this way our soil has been robbed of an ingredient without which no plants can mature, and no cereal grain form, As cur forests Lave dis appeared, this source of deterioration must be cut off, but a serious ldjury has been inflicted which nothing can cure but the re-furnishing of the potash to the soil: How it can be done, ts the groat inquiry for cur farmers. The export of our flour has been an other source of exhaustion to tho soil, in taking away from it the phosphate of lime that is necessary to give pia:npnc?s to the kernel The exhaustion cau be more easily reme died by -the application of bone du3t For many years the English farmers have carried on a large traffic in old bones, paying five dollars a ton for them. This has stimulated many to gather them cp, and even to rob the battle-fields of Europe of the bones of their brave defenders to enrich the wheat fields o England. By this course, the fields of Eug land have been made more productive, while the countries from which tho bones are taken cave Deen permanently injureu dv tueir 1083. ' The English, too, have sent to every island of South America, to procure mitre in th form of guano, to fertilize their fields, while tho Americans not only import little or none but negligently wastes that which nature forces on them. To Prevent the Yorm in Peach Trees. Clear away the dirt in April, from about the roots of the tree then take a suiall sheaf of straw the size of the tree wheat straw will answer, but rye is better place it neatly around the body of the tree, with a small cord adjust the straw then evenly around the ba3c of the trunk, and throw the dirt back upon the lower ends of the sheaf. This preveuts the eartn from coming ia contact with the bark of the trees when the moth deposits egg, and will always effectually pre vent the depredations of the peach tree worm lhe straw leaves the baik of the tree in a very clean and swathy condition, while the tar or pitch binds and destroys the bark, leaving it in a very unhealthy state. One application of straw will last one whole eea-aon. A magistrate asked an Irishman, nuiuuiug; nave you ever seen i&e sear lver seen the sav. vnnr l.nn or?
