The Democratic State Convention will assem ble at llarrisburg on the Kith inst. The result of its deliberations will bs waited for by the Democracy of the Satc with feelings of intense anxiety: and wc dace rely hope thst it will be composed cf intelligent, sincere and conservative members of the party men who belong to the Democrat!? party because they love its princi ples, and not because they regard it as a "stepping-stone" to placo and power. The crisis requires united action on the part of the members 1 of the Convention. L'.st fall the party cvn'o-ah-tertd'a disastrous defeat. The Republican State ticket was elected, and in the contest for mem hers of Congress cur opponents were equally mccessful. It is unnecessary to institute an in quiry into the causes which produced these disastrous rcsuUs. If the Democracy on the recond Tuesday of last October had presented an unbroken front to the tncmy.if sincere members of the party had not unfortunately allowed them nelvcs to bo persuaded by disappointed aspirants for office under the national Administration to temporarily abandon the party to which they belonged, and whose principles they loved, the entire Democratic State ticket would have Veen 2octed, and our n;lle old Commonwealth would tKrt be represented in the next Congress Vy a majority of Black Republicans. Experience keeps a dear school, but still it is & mark of wislom to profit by her lessons. What have the Democracy to gain by quarrelling among themselves, and allowing tin ir enemies to triumph 1 Can they reasonablj' hope for success in 1SC0, if they allow themselves to be defeated in 1S59? They should remember that, when united, thc-y always in days gone by triumphed over their enemies, and that when divided they nccr failed to eaccuntc-r defeat. Therefore, k-t past diiTerences be henceforth forgotten, and har mony be the watchword. If the cpo-'te coarse is pursued, if the spirit of faction prevails, if men are preferred to Treasures defeat is as certain as that the election wii! take place on the second Tuesday of next October. We have been told within the last week that an tffurt will be made to procure the passage of a resolution by the Stato Convention declaring Stepheu A. Douglas tu be the first choice of the Democracy cf Pennsylvania Lr the Presidency in 1SCD. V. Lope nothing of the kind will bo attempted. Tho attempt to procure the passage of such a icsolution by the Convention w ould be productive of very disastrous results, and render Uni' u and Harmony in the approaching cam paign impossible. We are confident that the resolution, if ofiVrcI, would not pass, but its re jection would of c v.'.rse furnish an excuse to discontented sririts tj "kick in the traces."
