Hert 5odrij. THE S01IG OF THE CAJ1P. BV UAVAKD TAYI.OK. "Give us a sony!" the Soulier cried, The outer trenches guarding, When the heated guns of the camp allied Grew weary of bombarding. The dark Itedan, in tilcnt scoff, Lay, grim and threatening, under; And the tawny mound of the Malakoff No lmigcr belched its thunder. There was a gsr1. One guardsmen said, Wc storm the forts to-morrow; Sing while we may, another day Will bving enough of sorrow." They lay along the battery's side, Ielow the smoking cannon Brave hearts from Severn and from Clyde, And from the banks cf Shannon. They Bang of love, and not of fame; Forgot was Briton's glory, Each heart recalled a iMffetent name. But all sang "Acme Laurie." Voice after voice csugl.t up the song, Until the tender passion Rose like an anthem rich and strong Their battle eve confession. Dear girl, her name he dared not speak, Yet as the song grew louder, Something upon the soldier's cheek, Washed off the stain of powder. Beyond the darkening ocean burned The blood)- sunset's ember", While the Crimean valleys learned, How English love-remembers. And or.ee again a fire of hell Rained from the Russian quarters, With screams of shot and bursts of shell. And bellowing of the mortars. And Irish Nora's eyes are dim For a singer dumb and gery; And Engli.sh Mar)- mourns for him Who sang of -'Aiuuo Laurie.'' Ah, soldier ! to your honored rest, Your truth an 1 valor bearing; The bravest arc the tendorcst The living are the daring. From the Boston Post. Natiorality cf the Democratic Party. The Boston Courier has the following judgment on the Democratic paity : "The Dt inocratic jarty ft ill retains the semblance of a national parti, but it is the semblance tody." This is a heavy accusation against the Deni ocratic party. It would have been moro tan gible and satisfactory had the Courier defined IS what it regards a3 the ''semblance of a iia- J tional party" which, the democracy still re tains. Also what the reality was which, by implication, it admits the democratic party once had which made it a national party; anel when, and in what way, it parted with, so vi tal an element. Jut we deny the justness of the accusation and the soundness of the judgment. A party can be said to be national only when its issues, its principles and its meas ures, its organization and objects, are as com prehensive as our country. Such a party will have common interests and purposes that will attract adherents in every State and ev ery locality. Now ail this is characteristic of the democratic party. It gathers, periodi cally, from all parts of the country, iu a grand national council hall; and this repn suntftive body is the authoritative cxrouuder of its creed. Such a body made ihe Cincinnati platform. This, surely, iulS5G, was no sham or "semblance;" it was reality so re garded by friend or foe. Is it less reality to day? Did not the Democracy of Missouri and North Caro!ii,a and Kentucky stand on this platform and gallantly meet their oppo nent.-: as it not by this sign that they conciuered? Look now at the North. The noble elcniocratie state convention of Ohio the zealous democracy of Maine the gather ing hosts of other free states, are all planting themselves on this national platform. They consider themselves a3 members of a great national party. Now go to these States and pay to their Democracy, you have the "seui llance" only of a national party you have lost the reality, and the reply would be like ly to be, that even the suggestion was a libel on their intelligence and patriotism. Again : the vote that placed President Bu chanan iu offico, came from every State and every locality iu the Union. There was no semblance here surely. A natiuual party and none other did the work. Now, when, pray, was the party denationalized? By whom was the deed done? Is it meant to be understood that the measures of President Buchanan are not national? Such is not the judgment pas sed on them by the true democrats north and south, east and west. They arc resolving that he has been faithful to the Cincinnati platform, and that his administration is emi nently worthy of confiieucc aid support Tbey are coming together as branches of a broad national party, to promote objects. Is there not meaning in all th:.-: or is it mere nham aud semblance? What is it but evidence of the nationality cf the deuie cratie paity? There is not a semblance of justice iu the allegation that the democratic party lias part ed with its nationality. It is its brightest jewel. It is its very life-blood. The time honored organization, country-wide iu its branches, st:.nds vigorous, and a land-mark amidst the iloating debi is of dissolved partie-, "has never" are the words of the Vice I'res ident "died, ducked or dodged. Its banner though torn sometimes, has never been trail ed in the dust. It has never lied from atiy question, but has always faced the kium'c. It was the ouly vital organization in the coun try that possessed historical reuown. The tenrcit)' for life and the capacity for great works which this party displayed were not owing to chauce to the drift of circumstan ces. There was a substantial philosophy un derlying it Why bael ii survived and flourished amid the wrecks of other parties? Because they had tried all questions iu the crucible of the constitution, and because, accordiug the best of his judgmcut, it had vindicated eejuality of birth and of individual rights, aud the rights of the States. Basing itself upon the constitution aud upou the in destructible rights of citizens aud States, the democratic party hail survived and was now vital, uutamnble and unconquerable." In its ranks musk the patrioti"- gather if they would maintain tho Constitution and save the Union. Cilir Simliscmcnfe. G URHKW. TODI).
