Buchanan and Breckinridge. . - ,Tbe Washington correspondent of the "Pa ritan Recorder," writes thus of the Democratic candidates : James Buchanan seems to be their chosen man. a bachelor of sixty-fire, not mixed up with the modern strifes, long the candidate of Pennsylvania, lately pushed forward with de termined resolution, and with signal success. He is a Presbyterian, dcneminationally, and a regular church-goer, .icd to ministers, and a- firm believer" in the necessity of religion as the conservative ele ment in the prosperity of the republic. John C. Breckinridge is a young man, of a noted Presbyterian, family of Kentucky ; a grand son of a former attorney general of the United States, and the nephew of three Presbyterian ministers, a member of the last Congress of Mr. Clay's district, voted for by many Whigs. He has lately obtained the constitutional age (35) for the office of Vice President, to which he has been nominated ITe is no office seeker, but a man of excellent dignity, strong domes tio attachments, steady habits, and sound abil ites. lie would even adorn the Presidential chair. It is a good sign, amid ail the threat ening ones of the times, that a great excited political convention should so cordially select two such men for the first offices of the nation. Calumny will find little to feed on Li the char acters of these men. Fremont and California. There is no doubt that Fremont is one of the most unpopular men in California. Here presented thai State in the United States Sen ate just one session, and his only exploit was to introduce a bill providing for the sulct of all the mineral lands by the government. This would have cut every miner out of his claim. The whole mining interest of Cali fornia was up in arms about it, and Fremont dared not even attempt to secure a re-tlcction to the Senate, 'i he bill that he introduced fell still born. That is the sum total of Fre mont s statesmanship. What is his chance for the electoral vote of California lie does not even reside there uow. PilUs.
