AT HOME AND ABROAD.
TOO LATE.
We have received several communications on
the subject of the common school system, w hich
came too late fur insertion in this weeks issue.
They will appear next week.
JAMK8 J. WILL.
Thi gentleman who at present is a candidate
for Register an 1 Recorder upon our county ticket,
we aresorry to learn has lieen confined to his hod
for some days past hy a se vere bilious attack, hut
we trust lie may soon recover, as at last accounts
lie was much better.

of Soptcmlier, at which time it is expected a large
concourse cf people will be in attendance
The list J look of the "Democrat and
Sentinel" is still open and room left fur a number

CAMHRIA GUARDS.
Tliis fine old company we are glad to see still
keeps up its organization. At an election held on
Monday hist Capt. B. McDcrmitt was rc-ch-ctod,
ko was 1st Lieut. John A. Blair, and Henry Myers
was elected 2d Lieutenant. Under these officers
we foci satisfied the company will prosper, and
now is the tiir.o for innny of our young men to
join the "old guards" and fi'l up the ranks.
OR A DING THE STREETS.
The grading and curbing of High Street is K ing
pushed forward with commendable energy. Major
David Evans our excellent Street Commissioner,
is determined to make a good job of it. and will
have it ready in a short time f rTplanking, and
when it is ready, wc hojc tho property hul krs
will lose no time in securing plank and having it
laid properly and without delay.
OODKV9 LADY'S HOOK.
The August number of this excellent work is
on our table, and it would seem from the present
number that tlie editor spares no pains in render
ing each numlicr a fair competitor with the pre
ceding numbers. It contains one hundred pages
of reading matter, with a number of spirited en
gravings. Godcy's Magazino as a literary work
will vie with anj, and we will not go too far in
isaying, it is ahead of many of the Magazines now
published.
HIGH PRICES.
Wc see hy a numlcr of our exchanges, that they
complain bitterly alxmt the high prices that thay
have to pay for the necessaries of life to keep soul
tuid body together. We have not complained as
yet, nor did we intend to, but owing to circum
stances we have o Just right to complain when
fubscruVrs as well as others, will j- w us to
have theinvork done for a mere aothi.ig.when they
are receiving the highest prices for their market
ing, &c. " Flour in this place is retailing at $1 1,00

think the laborer is vtrrihy rfhis hire, and so is

COSKEREE MEETING.
The Whig O nferces met at Johnstown in this
uounty an Friday last to nominate a candidate for
(Itigress- Owing to the absenco of some of tho
cuii forces an adjournment took place until Satur
day, when they re-assembled all the counties be
ing represented. . , .
" After a numlxT of ineffectual balloting had
taken place, the name of the present member,
Dr. McCuixouoiiof Ilnndingdon was withdrawn
and upon the 09th ballot Col. John' R. Epie of
Somerset was declared to be the nominee of the
conference. The pie-bald party in Somerset we
pupposc will now lustily fhout for the success of
Anti-Masonry and KnnirX'itfangism, not wit h
ntanding their opposition to secret societies. Will
tho "old line Whigs" of Cambria, Blair and Hun
tingdon join them ? We shall see. We have al
luded to this matter in another column-

With our numerous customers in giving them a

litht long, as wo have to pay the cash fr our
paper and the labor done in the office. Stern ne

rather it would be otherwise; wo are proud to say
tlmt we havo tho best paying subscribers of any
