From fe Germantown Telegraph. Lime ami Ashfs as Manure. ;Vr. Editor: Your correspondents linear. All advertisements handed in must hare think have recommended the use ol lime and ashes as a stiniulous lor vegetables, and as I have had some experience in the use of the latter, I 'wish to add my testi mony in their behalf, for 1 consider ashes both le iched or unleached, as one of the most decidedly valuable applications that a fanner can make to his soil I have ap plied them to corn, to w heat, beans, oats, peas, and indeed, to almost every variety of cultivated crop known to the farmer of modern days, andahvays w ith highly ben eficial and lucrative results. As to lime 1 am not prepared by experimental knowi-t edge, to endorse the high, and, as it feems i to me. often extravagant estimate w hich often (Xtravagunt estimate w h many of my countrymen place upon it, al- thciiirh I assign it a hi 'h rank amonsr min cral manures, and am even m th e habit ol i applying greater or less quantities every year. ' It has ever been by conviction since the first year I applied aslit, that for ever-' bushel given to my corn crop, I received,, in return, a bushel of sound corn. I have i never failed to save all my ashes for th is , purpose, and when lean. 1 purchase, deem-: ing them the best and most eliicient arti- I cle for the purpose 1 can obtain. Oil beans I require no other substance, audi grass lands, liberally top-dressed with) leached or unleached ashes, especially ifj the soil be of a co:d nature, a litt: ex hausted, and inclined to run to moss, will be more benefitted than by three or four times the money's worth of the best ma nure. Such lands are sterile, iu part.fiom the exhaustion of its humute and silicate j the latter of w hich must be supplied by j i lie addition ot some energetic alKalme material w hich will disintegrate the silicate et cxiant ia the soil in an insoluble state, and reduce them to a condition capable of j being appropriated and assimtauted by plants. This is elTected cither by lime or ashes. The insoluablc humus also, is rendered fit for nourishing vegetation bv the action of either of these. On Long Island, great account is made of barrilla, ashes which have been in a great measure deprived of their alkalescent properties, which are drawn for the use of the soap maker, and their application is productive of highly beneficial effects. They doubt less act both chemically and media ically cn lhe soil. To every farmer I would say .ave all your ashes; apply them to your lands and cultivate crops, and the result will demonstrate that they are the most valuable stimulus you can possibly pro cure.
