A Mr. Welder, of Detroit, has recently invented a new kind of steam engine, which is highly praised by the press of that city. The Free Press, after noticing it in operation, says: The steam is let into a 6mall cylinder which encloses one end of the shaft, passes through the shaft to :he cylinder which forms the arm, the cylinder revolving with the shaft. Here we have the whole of the steam engine.. We have seen it ma king its revolutions so rapidly that noth ing could be seen of the piston rod, and we would have been at a perfect loss to kave told where the propelling power was. The advantages secured by this inven tion are immense. It does away with the complicated machinery so liable to de rangement, and as there is no friction therefore to overcome, the same quantity of steam must give about two sevenths more power. It even doing away the complicated machinery does away a very large portion of the expense of the steam engine. Every portion can now be made in the lathe, and we think any -good shop could turn out a complete saw-mill engine in ten days, if they had the right of this invention. one year old. The Fastest Foot Race on Record.- 1 he great foot race which has bpen the chief topic with the "sporting men" for the week past, took place on the 30th ult The race was $300, one mile. The con testants were Hill, a bov of only 18 years old, of Tonawanda, and a Canadian In dian, of Montreal, a celebrated runner. The Canad ian was exceedingly well made, with a strength of limb and compactness of frame rarely seen; while Hill was quite the contrary; wanting that filling up which age will give him. At the word they went o.T very even, at a race horse speed, Hill out-footing the Canadian handsomely. He made the first quarter in 55 seconds con tinued to lead to the half, in 2 minutes 15 seconds. Just after passing the third quarter, he was taken with cramping in the side, and stopped, having to be helped in. The Canadian then passed and made the mile in the unprecedented time of 4 minutes 33 seconds. Had Hill held out for the mile even faster time would have been made. Buffalo Republican. 13s Want of sense renders some people obstinate, while wisdom makes them firm; since that which would be obstinacy in a wrong cause becomes firmness in a right one. To discriminate between the two is often difficult. Ocr readers will doubtless be glad to hear from "the man of the wheelbarrow." The Alta California, of Aug. 6, chronicles his arrival. "The Man with the Wheelbarrow, who had often been noticed by emigrants who have seen him on his way across the plains, arrived at Coloma about a week ago. He 6tates that he got the California fever, and as he had not the means to purchase a team, he loaded his wheelbar row with one hundred and fifty pounds of provisions, besides his cooking utensils and baggage, and started from the States on the long journey. He was able to J make greater headway than most of the teams, as he lost no time except for his meals and 6leep. When he arrived at Salt Lake, he found an opportunity of joining a company then about starting; so he left his faithful hand carriage by the side of the road, and "on he came a whistling." That man will make his pile." An Old Family. Mr. J. F. Jones, one of the Assistant Marshals engaged in taking the census of Kentucky . writes to the Maysvilie Eagle of a curious family he visted. It consisted of the mother, the daughter, the grand daughter, the .great grand daughter, and three great grand sons, who have never separated since they were first a family, the eldet being 102, and the - youngest J burial ground of that place.
