u "f. "'- . s, M From the Germantown Telegraph. Turning in Green Crops. During the last ten years the practice of turning in green crops has been extensive ly adopted, and so far as my information extends it has been attended with the most flattering results. Old, worn-out fields which had become so thoroughly emascu lated as scarcely to repay the cost of cul tivation, have, by this process, been thor oughly renovated, and at less cost, proba bly, than they could have been in any other way. In passing through the coun try, our attention is often drawn to farms which have been impoverished by an enor mous and emasculating system of cropping to the state of barren karro fields. Noth ing can be more forbidding than the ap pearance of barrenness which they exhibit; yet even those are not hopelessly barren. By plowing under the slight vegetation they produce and following up the under taking by a iiberal application of lime, un less the soil itself is of acalcarious nature, and then sowing buckwheat, peas or clover to be turned in when in blossom, a degree of energy will be communicated which will secure the continuance of increased & increasing fertility, and under a judicious system of rotary cropping, ensure good crops for a period of many years. "'Tib folly in the extreme to till Extensive fields and till them ill; Shrewd common sense sits laughing by, And sure your hopes abortive die, For more one fertile acre yields, Than the huge breadth of barren fields." Some have recommended millet as an excellent article for turning in; but of all cultivated crops, with the exception per haps of red clover, I consider buckwheat the best. By commencing early, three j crops of this grain may be turned in, in one season a dressing which will be found sufficient, under ordinary circum stances, for the most exhausted soil, and which is by no means objectionable on the score of expense or cost. A PRACTICAL FARMER. Bald Eagle Farm Mat 22 1850. Prom the Gcrmantown Telegraph. Bashes around Cultivated Lands. It is a very common thing that, in some sections, to see the borders and corners of fields cultivated in cereals, and in grass, overrun with bushes. This is a bad prac tice and no correct farmer will allow it to exist. The tendency of most bushes is to extend their roots, and send up shoots at a greater remove from the parent stock ev ery year, and thus ultimately to overreach upon and occupy the field. A rod or so of good fertile land around a large field, is of no small value, and should be cultivated and made to produce something of value to the owner, instead of being a disgrace and expense to him. When these occu pants have been permitted to stand for several years, extending their roots, and acquiring annually new size and energy, they become formidable tenants, and most fanners contemplates their removal as a task too onerous, and expensive to be at tempted. But the best way is to cut them close to the roots and having removed or carefully buined the tops, beat ofi", as fast as they appear, every succle the roots put forth. This, in a short lime, will utterly annihilate them, and the soil be cleansed for the action and amelioration of the plow. Old fields are often defaced by clumps of uusnes in open sections generally around stumps or ledges or heaps of stones. Af ter attaining a size to large for the scythe, they are generally neglected, and permit ted to occupy the soil to the exclusion of a profitable vegetation, without any at tempt whatever to coerce or arrest their growth. No correct fanner will permit the existence of these evils. A COUNTY FARMER. Revolting Disclosures as to a Jiurial riace. Potter's Field, at New York, where are buried the poor paupers from abroad, and all who cannot afford to bury themselves, is become so disgusting and intolerable a nuisance, that the Grand Jury have made it the subject of a present inent calling upon the common council to stop further interments, as it ascer tained the number of corpses are already seven thousand to the acre! Horrid. The Presentment says: 'The thin soil is trenched for the recep tion of the dead, and tiers of seven or eight coffins are piled one on another, up to and above the surrounding surface. Over the tops of these a little earth is thrown, but so partially, that frequently the ends, and in some cases, the tops of coffins are left exposed to view. It need hardly oc added, that these mounds of putrefaction spread out upon the face of a rock to the action of the sun; infect the atmosphere with a pestilential affluvia highly injurius not onlv to the fourteen hundred nprnnc in the public institutions on the Island, but to the surrounding neighborhood to great distance. FA Jersey man was very sick, and he was not expected to recover. His friends got around his bed and one of them says: 'John do you feel willing to die?" John "made aa effort' to give his views on the subject, and answered with his fee ble voice: I think I'd rather stay where I'm better acquainted."
