REED ORGANS,&o. • THE. . following. rnmarktrlind i . t3wggese tlons relative to this Immoneely popular instru ment will doubtless - Interest and profit very many of our readers, we commend' the article to their careful pernsal:— , A. hundred and ono makers of Organs, Cottago, Par lor, Cabinet, American, School Organs, eto. eta., aro each claiming to mako tho-best instrument In the world. Being,Bo,mparatively a now instrument,as at present constructed, wo aro convinced the public aro much loss capable ofjudging of Its merits, or delimits, than of most other instruments. If there is really an essential difference In-thom, if there - aro some excel lent and roam worthless ones tho publid should have some criterion for judging' f ones, tho facts - which . will enlighten them. Wenbeerfully concede the apace for this - article knowing - that there is hardly - a faffilly, or church, or school in all tho land, but is more or less interested in this topic. We are also aware of its be ing a great misfortune, a real calamity, to any of there to purchase en inferior et worthlesdOrgan, ruinous to good playing, and often a source of much annoyance and_vexation. We know this article to emanate from II candid and intelligent source, and thus we give it to surrenders. _ The question is often asked, what aro "reed organs?" We adewer, they are, in most cases, nothing in the world but the old melodeon in disguise. Many of the se-called organs have the same bellows, the same reeds, and the sand gensral internal curangement. With the Follows turned on edge to gain room, they have simply put oma more .pretentious exterior and a more high Bounding none. Bat an organ, to be Is reality anon.' grin, must have a wind chest or reservoir for air sopa _ rate from the believe, into which wind-chest the reeds open, and the tone has room to expand and perfect It self into the full round tone, similar to the flute or pipe organ, even, - smooth, firm, and mellow ; and this tone from reeds Cannot be obtaided in any other way known. Nothing so allitoyfra true titganisteas to have tho vol ume of souud swelling and jerking spasmodically with every variation of force on the bellows, which is always the case whore the reeds open direct lute the hollows or air passages, instead of a wind-chest or soutbbox. And yet some" makers oven go so far as to claim this spasmodic or automatic jerking of the bellows en the reeds as an excellence, just as though they did not know that it must very soon threw the reeds out of tune, and injure the bellows; and as though it were not an easier matter to obtain a much better and mere easily nutuaged swell by other methods. 11,0 truth Is any organ, so called; or melodeon which has the wind acting directly upon the reeds, Is nothing more nor less than n hugoaccordeonedreositrup as-you may.- . And when pre strandtrue 11111FiCIOBB become aerate of the tact that they can eutain these that are organs iu fact as well as in name, they Will buy no more of the objectionable ones. Then again the swell should al ways be separate and distinct from the bellows, so as 'Mut to haffiteted-omby-thecirmadr-or-softablowingr-but convenient. so That the player can use it with the knee separate Trent the hands or feet, and thus alWays un der easy control, to be used ad libitum. The large divided bellows, or double bellows, is also a very important improvement. By thin means not onlyenn the wind be supplied More evenly, but with far greater ease to the performer, front the fact that either bellows alone will be sufficient for the lighter melodies, thus permitting the player to change. about and rest the feet at will ; then, if the bellows is of the requisite large sloe, end having the wind-chest o reservoir, all will be well. As to the reeds, they mu be scientifically tutted and voiced, or all the otherg d di i, qurtlities in the world cannot produce a good tone 111. _strutuunt.
