Dr. i"cheuc.,, I will now make my statement to you,
as follows:—About eighteen untruths ago I was attack
ed with a severe cough, and it settled on my lungs; I
could not retain anything I ate, and suffered with
evening fevers and night err eats I was very much
reduced. The whites of my eyes were very yet tort ;
likewise nt' skin ; my appetite all gene, and unable
to digest What 1 did eat; buwoln sweeten, irregular and
costive. I was very low spirited, and bail such violent
spells ~f coughing when I laid down at night and when
arose in the morning that they would huNt sue or
two hburs.
I then would be nearly exhausted, and was entirely
unable to lie on my lett side. I cannot describe my
wretched suffering as I would wish to do. Every or
gan in my body was diseased or deranged. Such was
iny situation at this Linke, and I was confined to my
bed from the last of I•'ebruary, 1802, to.lune, 1803, rot
able to sit up. I had the best of medical attendance
the whole of t h e time. fly cough was SO very bad that
it racked me very much. lat this Lime raised a large
vino ti ty ct thick, yell, w, Mien sive matter, sometimes
with blood, end it was generally accompanied by nau
sea and a furred and thick coated tongue. At the
time of coughing so badly I would have sharp, shoot
ing pains in my left side and heart, night sweats, and
soreness all through my whole chest; hadtuunh In
ward fever, pain in my back and under my shoulder
blades and in thin small of my back, and at times 1-0 se
vere that it would throw me LA° spasms. Now my
physician gave MO up to die. Otlmrs 1 had, and thu
bust of them but they could do nothing nor me, and
at that time 1 was nothing but akin andbenes I then
was hr the western part of Missouri. In June last WO
I eft there for the East, and in August last win came to
now York, and I was so reduced Lout I could only
walk a little with my husband's help. Atter I had
been here in short Lime the salt water breeze mad•• me

.11 a physician for aid. W e haw Mos of the best ph)-
sinians of New York on the diseases of the lungs, and
doctors of ail kinds, but of no avail. They said I was
past cure, and that my lungs were too far gone for any
one to CU, MU. [tot at this time I ',canon my feet a
bout the house. not able to do much of anything. In
November last I grew worse, and the consumption
diarrhea set in aad lasted about eight weeks. Ni e had
tried all and everything that 1 could grasp, at like a
dying person for my diseases—consumption and liver
complaint—but of no avail.
In January. 1803, I was brought down again mi my
bed, and was not expected to live the night out. My
husband stayed at my side, and othei friends, mud
they all give .me up to die. At this time every 0110
who saw me did not think I would ever leave my bed
a living woman. The first nivtd I was attacked with
spasms, and was deranged most of the time. A friend,
Mrs. Harris, came to in e tun the last of the week, and
brought the Sunday Mercury. In it was an account or
a great cure purf, rmed by ,Dr. Schenck. She read it to
me, and it was so much like my disease (hat 1 asked
my husband to go and 600 bile for me. At this time
had given up all hopes of ever gi.tting well again,
and made my peace Ni ith God, to balmily whenever he
called tor are,
Ou the 27th of January, 1803, my husband called on
Dr. Schenck, 32 Bond street, Now York, and stated to
him my case, with a request for_ hint to cull and see
me which ho did, and examined mo with the resist,
outetcr. When he Mae shout to go I asked him It ho
could cure me i Gin reply was; "1 cannot tell, both
lungs are diseased, and the bronchial tubes are affect
ed Cu both sides." And yet he seemed to think £hero
wen lungs enough left to effect a cure if the diarrhea
could be stopped. Ito said tnorder to do this, he would
here to give me Maudralie Pills in small dusmat first,
to carry off the morbid matter, and then, with astrin
tin hoped to check It, which he did, but the con

saying it would do me no harm, If It did me no good.
