u. ~~~~~~~~tti~~llo PICKLES. The trade in cucumber _pickles haS largely increased within the last four or five years, antris now a branch of busi ness of considerable importance. The demand having been created, it becomes the business of the gardener• and the farmer to supply it, and if cucumber growing be rightly•managed, it becomes a source of considerable revenue to those who embark in it extensively ; and it may be made one of the many incidental items that aggregate to quite a large sum with the generality of small farmers, for it is no difficult matter to put up a few barrels of pickles, for market, from a small garden patch of cucumbers. As many will doubtless do this, the present season, we wish to impress upon them the importance of picking their cucumbers when quite small, fin• upon this will almost entirely depend the re ceipt of a satisfactory price for them in market. Large pickles Witi 710 e a - il. We were told by a pickle dealer, a few days since, that he now know of a lot of three or four hundred barrels in this city that he could buy for the freight charges, but that be could not dispose of them. For the reason that the people in the C OM]. try have been in the habit of picking their cucumbers when so large, dealers in town can nardly be induced to 'look at them when sent in to t.he commission men Hence the latter are obliged to dispose of them " for a song," and the grower cannot understand why. when pickles are quoted so high. he can ob tain no more for his crop. The reason is simply that stated above. The pickles are too large. To be salable, the cucum ber should seldom exceed four inches in length—three inches is still better, and (something depending on Ore variety.) from. that down to two inches is still preferable. These smaller ones being fitted for putting up in glass. bring the best prices. It may at first seem to the inexperi enced that by picking when so small, the erop — will be greatly reduced but it is not so, for the vines will produce a vast ly larger number of small than of large cucumbers. There is extra work in picking, but this is much more ill balanced by the difference in price. Gather the encumbers when smal and put them up in gnat conditi,m. an there is always a market for them in th city at paying rates.—Pruir,', THINNING FRUIT Few owners of fruit tree , will he ap to consider any advice under thiA hem as applicable the present season, the en) l being mostly a very liyht one her , are some trees. however, on which th , fruit might be thinned to much advan tage. Many trees are allowed to beg in ordinary seasons, front fortr to si, times as many specimens as accords witl their full and perfect development Th fruit is consequently small and deficien in flavor. 'lbis is the very rear to lean a lesson on this subject. If the tree. bear but few specimens compara take off the ,cabby. wormy and kiete, tive ones. which lie Vahll . ;I any event. and the crop which i- leA',,, having plenty 4 ro,on. will -how a . 4 1Zi , . beauty and p -rl'i cti,,ii that cannot bill to convince cultivators tit* the tulvantay..e td thinning. \\'e have heard a skillful or chardist assert that by taking of r two thirds of his peaches, the rentainder ti - creased so much in size as to gixe the same minteer of bushels as without thin ning, while their improved appearatn e and quality enabled hint to realize trifle the price .. It is an easy task to thin out the fruit of an orchard, and is a positive saving of labor—inasmuch as it is easier to re move the fruit when it is small, and rt - quires no care in picking and handling. than to do it whim the specimens hecomt full sized at, maturity. For example, if a tree hears' first three thousand spe cimens, it is easier to take oil two thou sand when they may all be thrown into a single basket, than to pick this same two thousand afterwards with all the care required in careful handling to pre. vent bruising One great advantage in gathering large, line spechn /IS, over small and imperfect ones, is The greater rapidity with which they may be taken from the tree.— Connie, Oentlenur h. KILL THE WEEDS There is no better month in g which to kill the Canada thistle. us well a; weeds generally, and the destruction of bushes, than' August. It is also peculiarly a time when farmers are not so much hurried, and when the weeds have fully develop ed themselves. The farmer can see at a glance, indeed has SCCUI al the season the necessity of commencing the work of de struction. The best thins to be done with weeds of all kinds extirpated from the land, is to gather them in huge heaps to remain there until dry, and then burn thenyip, root and branch." ':Tie' practice of some fanners, who look only to their own selfish purposes, who live for themselves and to themselves, and rarely have a neighbor with whom they are on friendly terms, is to pull up and throw into the highway the weeds from their fields. There they are loft to, ripen their' Seed, and the first ,heavy shower of rain that comes, they are carried away, sometimes for mile's, either into the lands of sime Other' farmer, or into a'streani, to'holanit ed along the banks fora great distance. e have more' than once seeo,.pcople: calling themselves farmers and Christiaos engaged this mean business:=-oe* mantomn Telegraph. • ' lief - The Farmington (Me) Chroaid e says a species orinsoot is 'threatening the extermination of. the envelops the • top Of the 'Ana- in ! a, welt, and Tretictits - its;.growth and llowerini It •would,,,De a saving to our country of millions of dollars annually if this nosi ; tms weed could •be atterlyi,c*tiFpntpd,, he Long Looked For ilae Come DR. These all having the same'origia, requite the same remedy, viz. purification and invigoration of the blood. 'Purify the blood, and these dangerous distempers leave you. With feebleJoul, or corrupted blood, you can not hare health ; with that “ life of the flesh " healthy, you cannot have scrofulous disease. is compounded from the most effectual anti dotes that medical science has discovered for this afflicting distemper, and for the cure of the disorders it entails. That it is far superior to nny other remedy vet devised. is known by all who have given it it trial. That it does com bine virtues truly extraordinary in their effect upon this class of complaints, is indisputabiy proven by the great muhitude of publicly known and remarkable cures it has made of the following diseases : King's Evil or Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Erup tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Ery sipelas. Rote or St. Anthony's Fire, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Coughs from tu berculous deposits in the lungs, .White Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and Syphilitic Infections, Mercurial Disoases, Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole series of complaints that arise from impurity of the blood. Minute reports of individual cases may be found in Atclia's AMERICAN ALMANAC. to rile druggists for gratuitous distribution, wherein may lie learned the directions for its use, rind some of the remarkable cures width it has made when all other remedies had failed to afford relief. Those cases arc purposely taken from all sec tions of the country, itt order that every reader milt' have access to some one who can speak to him of its benefits from personal experience. -Serofulit depresses the vital energies. and 'thus leaves its victims far more subject to disease and its fatal results than are healthy constitu tions. Hence it tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten, the average duration of human life. The vast hnportance of these considera tions has led us to spend years in perfecting a remedy which is adequate to its cure. This we now oiler to the public under the name of .writ ' s SARSAPARILLA, although it is com posed of ingredients, some of which exceed the best of Sarsuparilla in alterative power. By its aid you may protect yourself from the suffer ing and danger of these disorders. By its peculiar tut- ;his iemeily stimulates the vital func tion., and thus c::pels the distempers which ldik within the system or burst out on any pail of it. We know the public have been deceived by ninny cifnipound,'of Sarsaparilla, that promised TO11•• 1 1 ;Old lid nothing; but they will neither be deiani eil nor disappointed in this. Its virtues vice been proven by abundant trial, and there remain: no question of its surpassing excellence for The cure of the afflicting diseases it is in tended to reach.
