The raiders reached Rocky Mount about 12
o'clock, meeting, with no resistance. The
small squad of fifteen or twenty men guard
ing the bridge over Tar liver, near Rocky
Mount, of course did not risk an engagement
with'such odds, but, we presume, retired in
good order.
They immediately proceeded to burn the
depot, destroyed the water tank, aud commit
ted other acts of 'vandalism in the vicinity.—
They also burnt five thousand bales of cotton,
beta ging chiefly to private individuals, which
had tit:cumulated at Rocky Mount, and a squad
repaired to the large cotton factory near by,
owned by Wm S. Battle, where they applied
the torch, and that spacious building, with
all its valuable machinery, was speedily re
duced to ashes. This is really a serious loss
to all that portion of the State, as well as
Southside Virginia. A very large quantity
of cotton yarns made at this factory were
purchased by the people of Eastern Carolina
and Soutliside Virginia, who, since the war
have been largely thigaged in manufacturing
clothing for home consumption.
The regular mail train for Wilmington
passed just thirty minutes before the arrival
of the raiders, Rod thus made a narrow escape
from capture. The train on the Tarburough
branch of the Wilmington road was not so
fottuaute. It was captured by the raiders,
and two car loads of ummunitiun and, over
31.),000 lbs. of bacon were destroye'.
They also attempted to destroy the cars
and locomotive. We understand they only
partially succeeded in this latter part of their
undertaking.
The train from Weldon, which reached here
yemettlay afternoon, brought no intelligence
Mier than the above.
Travel and telegraphic communication be
tweet' Weldon and Wdmingtun are now inter
rupted, and we can find no one who is able
to inform us when it will be resumed. A
military force sufficiently large to prevent a
repetition of the destruction effected on

The damage has been done.

which resulted in kha-death of Samuel C Jor
