INTERRESTINO PARTICULARS OF TEIE ATTACK. New YORK, July 26.—We are indebted to the Heinld for the following account of the operations near Charleston, received per the steamer Arago. On the ilith the rebels attenipted to drive our forces from James Island. The attack was sudden and unexpected ; but General Perry met and repulsed them with great slaughter. The gunboat Pawnee, which supported the left flank, grounded, and a rebel battery opened upon her, firing aboitt lifty shots, thirty-nine of which hit her. She subsequent ly floated off and opened upon the rebels, put ling them to Night. Our casualties were :mall, and the rebels were taught a lesson which they will not soon forget. The bombardment of Fort Wagner was re mowed on the morning or the 2 - 21, the iron clads co operating with the army. During the day Fort. Wagner silenced for collie time and her colors shot away. The new Union batteries wet e opened upon the rebels, doing great execution. The small squad of fifteen or twenty men guard ing the bridge over Tar liver, near Rocky Mount, of course did not risk an engagement with'such odds, but, we presume, retired in good order. They immediately proceeded to burn the depot, destroyed the water tank, aud commit ted other acts of 'vandalism in the vicinity.— They also burnt five thousand bales of cotton, beta ging chiefly to private individuals, which had tit:cumulated at Rocky Mount, and a squad repaired to the large cotton factory near by, owned by Wm S. Battle, where they applied the torch, and that spacious building, with all its valuable machinery, was speedily re duced to ashes. This is really a serious loss to all that portion of the State, as well as Southside Virginia. A very large quantity of cotton yarns made at this factory were purchased by the people of Eastern Carolina and Soutliside Virginia, who, since the war have been largely thigaged in manufacturing clothing for home consumption. The regular mail train for Wilmington passed just thirty minutes before the arrival of the raiders, Rod thus made a narrow escape from capture. The train on the Tarburough branch of the Wilmington road was not so fottuaute. It was captured by the raiders, and two car loads of ummunitiun and, over 31.),000 lbs. of bacon were destroye'. They also attempted to destroy the cars and locomotive. We understand they only partially succeeded in this latter part of their undertaking. The train from Weldon, which reached here yemettlay afternoon, brought no intelligence Mier than the above. Travel and telegraphic communication be tweet' Weldon and Wdmingtun are now inter rupted, and we can find no one who is able to inform us when it will be resumed. A military force sufficiently large to prevent a repetition of the destruction effected on day iv now at hand on the road, but unfor tunately they are just in note to be too late. The damage has been done. LATER We learn by telegraph from Weldon thai Ilse bridge debtruyed by the raiders sp.inned Tar river but it short dktatice from lioeky Mount.
