MISSING OFF[CERB*—The anxiety of
many families 39 to the fate of those who
were. reported missing from Gen. Ranks,
after the retreat from Strasburg and 1" out
Royal, remains unappeased. Among those
who have to be accounted for aro Capt. Crit.
tender]. Assistant Quartermait-r, Cdpt
Charles B. Penrose, of the commissariat,
and Mr. George B. Myers, clerk to the latter
named officer. They were last seen about
five or six o'clock on &third tv, the 21th of
May, in Strasburg., in a carriav, and were
heard debating which road they should take
to escape, a portion of the enemy being
close to Banks' main army.
Mr. Jae9bMyers and 'wife, who wore
captured upon the retreat of Banks, returne.l
to their borne in Carlisle, last weok, having
been liberated by our men.
Since writing the above, Capt. Penrose,

a fellow prisoner. The Captain was cap.

burning his stores, and is at present at
Lynchburg, and expects soon io be paroled

FIAT Lux.—Will somebody tell us
whether our etreetlamps are ma la for onto
mont or use ? A lamp post is certainly a very
ornamental thing in itself, .but pray can it
riot be made useful. Wiry is it, Oh ! worthy
"Board of Bunsbys" that on wet and stormy
nights we have no light ? Is it because you
are so very economical : or is it on account
of the delicate health of your lamplighters ?
If they are of week odnatitutions we pity
them, and certainly admire the fadierly'aare
you have over them. But for fear they might
die, pray get Borne men of good constitutions
who can stand the effects of our changeable
olimate. 4
Whoever has charge of the :lighting of the
;amps, seems to think that the moon always
shines when the altnanao Bays 80. This cur.
tainly is a very peculiar kind of lunacy.
We have spoken of this thing again and
again, and it appears to do no good. Friday,
Saturday, Stinday, Aloaday, Tuesday and
Wednesday uights Were wet, dark and stormy,
and not a street lamp lighted. Is there no
way of mending this matter? We can see
`no other than a written remonstrance to the
town council, t/Aot naighth_ring thorn to a sense
of their duty.
