New Orleans: On the forecastle deck stood
a group,.consiiiing - of a master and tivecir six
slaves t including a woman with a child at the
breast, '• who were apparently going to the,
South.' Just as the last bell of the steamer
rang out its peal for departure, and the lines
were about to be cast loose, the mother was
bade to give np her infant, and was told that
she must go without it. At this intimation
the poor creature became frantic with.grief.
She caressed the child a moment, then flew
to he: trunk, into t hick bad been packed va
rious little articles of clothing that she bad
made up for it to wear. These she first
pressed fervently to her lips, and then bestow.
ed them upon the child. Her owner then or.
glared ber to follow him, and she mechanical. !
ly started to obey, but the promptings of na
ture were too strong within her swelling
breast to be resisted, and with loud sobs of
grief, she turned, embraced her child; and
clung to it with the tenacity of despair.
The heartrending grief of the woman, and
her frahtic gestures, attracted the attention
of persons passing along the levee, snd strong
ly excited the sympathies of many.. The
owner was asked by a gentleman, if he would
sell..the Woman arid child. To this he assen
ted, Mid demanded sea for them. 'Upon in.
quiryjoweveii, it was' ascertained that the
woman wall fine sold down the river, and
that the chili would be disposed of here.—
The bystanders volunteered too,raise sub.
scriptions to buy the child; and send it with
its mother, and several of thein proffered $lO
a piece. At this juncture Captain Norton,
the captain of the - boat, came forward and
told the owner of the 'ileitis that he would

'rho Mesmerized Children.
We recently 'mentioned that three children
of Me. 3ones,'near Clearapring, Md., were
affected with singular symptoms, resembling
mesmerizediubjects. ..The Sentinel says, it
is ascertained to be the effect of mesmerism
but:_hOsv__ceniunumeated,_is_usiknown_lty_
reversing the passes, as used by mesmerizers
to bring subjects out of thesomnambulic state,
they were restored to wakefulness in El few
minutes. The:children allege they were put
into the state mentioned by. a pedlar, who
visited the !ionic the day before , they exhibi
ted the symptoms. The Sentinel says:
The little girl, the day before she became
entirely, relieved, staled. that she „would be
well+-antlArma-t:,.her-pretlietion,rat-the-pr
cise time,' the symptoms all disappeared.—
Two of the children remain affected, and one,
it is feared, will die,
as his legs are becoming
, perfectly paralyzed, So as
_to prevent his
walking.
The editor of the Sentinel, in company
with Dr. Garry, visited them few days ago,
and .
They appear to delight to be asleep, as
they term it, during which time they laugh,
dance, run, and strive bymvery Means in their
power to stet out. We took the mesmeric
fluid oiled them, probably eight or ten times,
which reiluired not exceeding ten to thirty
seconds 4611 time. Any person can Wiese
them with the reversed passes, provided they
are willing, otherwise they cannot be aWak
ened, At the time of inditing this, which has
been about two hours since last aroosing them,
vie feel a considerable relaxation of the nerv
ous system, together with peintiOn the bead,
armv, mnd extremities, which we alone attri
bute to our having extracted the nervous fluid
from them, Numerous persons are daily
visiting them."
EMIGRATION OF CANADIANS TO THE U. S.—
The Rev. Arthur Chiniqiiy, the great Cana
dian apostle of tempermice, having recently
been on a tour through the United States, has
addressed a letter to the Melanges. Roligeux,
to n hich be says i
• "I do not exaggerate when I say that there
are no less than M,OOO Canadians In the U.
States, and unless efficacious means are taken
to stop this frightful emigration, before Len
years two hundred thousand more of our
compatriots will have carried to the American
Union their arms, their intelligence, end their
hearts. It is no part of my present plan to
examine the causes of this deplorable emigre
lion ! but it miist be always true, that when es
people en inaase quits its country, it is because
that unfortunate country is struck with some
hideous plague—is devoured by tome cancer.
• • • • God has placed in the heart of
man love fur his cuontryi and when a man
turns his back upon his country, and %n ith the
eye moistened by tears bids than eternal adieu,
it is because •umethiug essential has been
wanting to him in that country. It is because
lie bus wanted bread, room or just liberty. I
leave others to say which of the three has
been deficient in Canada. All that I can as
sure you is, that in the United States these
three essential elements of the life of nations
are to be found in abundance."
Our Reputation Abroad.
A late Berlin letter states that the general
impression in Europe, even in Germany,
where we are better known than elsewhere,
is, that our country is an excellent place to
make 'money in, and to' be free from the an
noyance of epic.; and the machinery of Euro•
pcan government; but that the law affords .no
seettrity to life or . property, these lying at the
mercy of the mob. The royalist pope's leave
nothing undone to deepen this impression.—
The 'occasional bloody .atreet combats, nape.
cially in the Southwestern States, are eager
ly seized upon.. Tarring and feathering
Scenes, the tearing of men (corn limb to limb
by mobs, &c., are located at New York;and
