THB editorial writer in Harper's Weekly sees th» fight between Cleveland and Hill in this light: "There are some well meaning persons who say that, after all, the President would do better to avoid a quarrel with Senator Hill, and to nominate a man not objection able to him. Those who think an fail to grasp the importance of the point in dis pute. When Senator Hill had substantial ly proclaimed that opposition to a crimi nal who was a candidal fcr a judgeship ii> New York should disqualify any man guil ty ol that opposition for a Federal appoint ment, would not the President have ad mitted and countenanced this disqualifica tion if he had on such a ground abstained from nominating a man offensive to Sena tor Hill, and selected one in this respect aooeptable to the Senatort To put the question is to answer it. The Preside t was bound by every consideration of honor and of pnbtio morality to deny this disqual ification in the most emphatic manner pos eible, and to lontinue denying it, were it even against the whole Senate, until every Ohance of making that denial effective was exhausted. The idea that a politician i»f 80 low a character of David B. Hill should presume to decree the exclusion from the Federal Supreme Bench of every honora ble lawyer in the State of New York who opposed the elevation of a criminal to a judgeship, and that the Senate, by way ol oourtesy, should sustain and enforce this decree, is too monstrous and revolting t» be endured with patience. The President deserves the gratitude of every good citi zen for manfully resisting it, and it is t« be hoped that this striking object-lesson Will serve to point out to the whole conn try the so-oalled courtesy of the Senate as a public danger and an unmitigated in sult to the people." McKinley and Grow. The tremendous ovation given McKin ley and Grow at Old City Hall, Pittsburg, last Thursday night is an indication of the political feeling of the times. The night was cold, the snow deep, but the weather was not too inclement to drive those home who could not get into the ball. Through the storm they stood and listened as best they oould to the speakers and the bursts of applause They stayed until the distinguished guests came out, and then left only to follow the carri ages. V. hen the speakers walked into the hall in company with C. L. Magee and Senator Flinn the applause was deafening. While Gov. McKinley was the favorite, Pennsyl vania's old war horse was not forgotten. They were both cheered to the echo. Everybody thought Galusha A. Grow's place was baok in congress and they also thought the other gentleman ought to fill the presidential chair. These two subjects were not tainted at, but were brought out plainly. After the cheering had died out every body was eager for the meeting to begin. Senator Flinn stepped to the front of the stage and in a tew words told why the peo ple of Pittsburg were called together. Ue then nominated District-Attorney Clarenoj Burleigh as chairman of the gathering. His oboice was the choice of all and the coun ty's prosecuting attorney was loudly cheer ed. The meeting quickly elected hiiu and he at once eutered upon bis duties. In in troducing the two speakers be used but few words, but made good use of those. Mr. Grow talked for an boar, and all through his speech he bold the attention ot the audience. He i>< a pleasant talker nd knows how to weave in the humor and pathos. He was frequently interapted by the cheers of hit auditors When he touch ed upon the president's Hawaiian policy, the name uf Grover Cleveland wus biased. Before be cloned t>e paid a glowing tribute to Gov. licKinley and the audience *tbeu wanted to elect Mr. McKinley president at once. liie reception of Guy. Mc.Kinley was nearly indescribable. Tbe audience siiuplv went wild and never quieted down uutii tbe celebrated man Irom Ohio was out ot their aigbt. The ovatiou be received wtieu he begau his speech was not a marker to the reception be was given when tbe meter ing adjourned. Uiirdly bad the governor spoken his last words when there «■« * ru*h uiade tor tbe stage. Hundreds ol people jostled unu each other in tneir eagerness to get near euougb to Air. ilr- Kinley to shake bauds. Tney fought lb-n way up over tbe footlights, crowded tbe stage as it never was before, and tairlj lilted Mr. McKiuley off histeet. Dtiwu in the body of tbe house was mass of humanity that could not crowd up on tbe stage, aud they were cry in* for th. sp alter. Those behind the fooi light - picked Gov. McKiuley up, carried hi;II over tbe press tallies and d.»wn to tlit masses. Hundreds surrounded him, and it was only with ibe greatest of trou >le he wa<» gotten out to his carriage. The peo ple followed and as the carnage rolled away three cueers were given for the "nex' president of the United Stales. As Pennsylvania went «n Tuesday, s.i will go tbe Union next Fall. NEARLY 175,000. The election iu Pennsylvania has clearly xhown the popular will towards the Demo cratic ideas of the tariff, an<l Grow has a pieurality of 170,000, or more. In the town the Republicans again triumph and elect nearly all the officer*. Philadelphia ba< given Galusha A Grow, Kepablican candidate for congressman-at large, a plurality of 58,346 votes and the latest figures indicate that the remainder ol tie ante will give almost a hundred tbous aud.Thi* will bring the ex-speakers pleural:- ty «iver Hancock up to altnort 100.000, tbe orgeat majority ever given anv candidate •y the Keystone state. In a dozen of the smaile-t counties notably along the norih e n tier, the Democrats made slight gaiu>-, iut these gains were moro than counter balanced by the large vote polled by the Republicans on the central, eastern and " estern counties. In Heading the Repub 'icans made a sweep.carryi"ir both branch es of co Q i s for the fir-<t tins# in a num >-r ol years, thus giving theui the eutite city government. The county gives Grow 1 500 plurality. There I A ere few speeches and no brass bands I' needed nono. The Democratic party in Pennsylvania simply disappeared lit" » u»bbliug stream that ruus into an earth quake. As Gov. AfcKinley said in his recent speech in Pittsburg, the people of Pennsyl vania had an opportunty yesterday which those of other States would have been gUd to have—an opportunity to deliver their judgment upon the Democratic adminis tration of the country's affairs—aud the\ used it as the people of other States would nave used it if it had been offered to them. The trumpet Bounded for the triumphal march ol 1890 and Pennsylvania takes the right of the line. The returns from the county as far as in indicate a light vote being pulled and are so incomplete, a groat number of the Boards having failed to send in unsealed returns, that it is impossible to print a table ot any satisfaction this week. We will publish the table next week. THE BOROCOU. The election in Butler was interesting and a large vote was polled. In every ward there good contests and some sur prises are the result. The borough again goes Republican and Grow's pleurality is 24 larger tnan the corresponding vote at the last State eleotion.
