On Monday of this week it was reported that the site for the Home for Feeble Minded ChildreD had narrowed down to and between Butler and Westmoreland Counties. The same news however stated that the Commission was to re-assemble at Franklin, Yenango County, the home of Judge Heydrick, on that same day to re examine the site offered near that place. The Commission did meet there again but so far as we can learn ao decision has as yet been reached. Having revisited Yenango County we take it for granted that the Commission will revisit Butler and other places offering good sites, and as we said last week, the State Board of Public Charities which has a say in the location, may advise it* location at this place. The great mistake of Governor Pattison in ap pointing the Commission was that he did not select men outside of Western Penn sylvania. Then there conld have been no local influences brought to bear upon the Commission and their work would have been much more pleasant. However, as Butler has offered the best possible site, we believe this Home will yet be located here. THE City Hall and Opera House of At lantic City were barned last Thursday. Washington Notes. On Thursday the Senate Finance Com mittee agreed npon a bill providing lor the repeal of the Silver-purchasing clause of the Sherman Act coupled with a paragraph pledging the government to retain both metals at their market value. On Friday Sibley made his funny speech, a note of which is made elsewhere. On Monday Crisp announced his commit tees. He deposed Springer of Illinois from the Chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee and gave it to "Wilson of West Va. Reed and Dalzell are retained in that committee. Holman was deposed trom the Chairmanship of the Appropriation Committee, and Sayers ofTexas put in his place. Springer was made Chairman of the Banking and Currency Committee. Silver-dollar Bland remains at the head of the coinage committee, but it is almost an empty honor now, with the silver debate well on towards a vote. Ex-Governor McGeary of Kentucky, re turns to the bead of the foreign relations committee from which he was displaced two years ago in order that the speaker might keep nis pledge to Mr. Blount of Georgia. Mr. Holman of Indiana is given the chairmanship of the committee oi Indiana affairs to heal his wounded feelings. One appointment of the speaker's is sure to cause him to be justly oriticised. The chairmanship of the committee on pensions which since the war has generally been given to an old soldier or a member from North, this time goes to the south, to Mr. Moses of Georgia. Thirty-two chairmanships go to the South and twenty-three to the north. This number includes the chairman of the four committees previously appointed —rules, milage, acoounts and enrolled bills. Af ter November, when Mr. O'Farrall will resign to enter upon the duties of the gov ernor ef Virginia, Jason B. Brown of Indi ana will go to the head of the oommittee on elections, and then the totals will be 31 and 24. By states the chairmanships are divided as follows: Alabama, 3; Arkansas, 1; Con necticut, 1; Georgia, 4; Illinois, 4; Indiana, 3; Kentucky 3; Lonisana. 1, Maryland, 1, Mississippi, 2; Missouri 3; Michigan, l; New Jersey 2; New York, 5; North Carolina, 2; Ohio, 2; Pennsylvania 2, Rhode Island, 1; South Carolina, 1; Tennessee, 3; Texas 3; Virginia, 3; West Virginia, 2; Wisconsin, 2. Tuesday, in the Senate, Voorhees of In diana made a flighty speech explaining wtiy he intended voting for unconditional repeal. Wednesday morning, both Stone and Dalsell made speeches in favor of honest money, and repudiating Sibley's argu ments. Dalzell's effort was a brilliant one, and at its close he was congratulated by everybody. Sandy Hill Items, Aug. 17th, 1893. Mr. John Mcßride intends going to the "World's Pair as soon as he- gets his crop in. Some boys Baw a very large snake one day last week. They tried hard to get it, but it was too many for them. The Whitesides boys have hauled the largest load of oati ever known. It is said they hailed one hundred dozen. John Harbison had a very large crop this year. John Neithercoat has not got his house finished yet. Albert Hickey has not started for the Pair yet. W. Y. Petersville Items. Alexander P. Strite and children and his brother Steve and son, from Shar-Oaks,are visiting friends in Petersville. James Martin and daughter of Browns dale, and Dwight and Maud Henshaw of Yarona, visited their Aunt, Mrs. Mary Weisz one day last week. "Mrs. Mary Hollingworth and her daugh ter, Mrs. Chestnut of Pittsburg, are visit ing friends in this place. Mr. Allen Weisz and wife, and Mr. Isaac Meyers and wife, from Medina Co., 0., are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. S. "Weisz and other friends in this county Miss Birdi9 Xicklaa will start for Ohio, Thursday, on a visit. UWDKRWRITKR. Petrolia Items. The Campmeeting is booming and is a grand success. Sinners is being convert ed and backsliders are being reclaimed, and the church is being built up. English and Vensel will move into their new building this week. It is a very nob by building. Hotel Central, JohnS. Byers, proprietor, will be open on Thursday of this week to accommodate the public. Success to you, John. W. A. Fleming is improving. He is able to be at the camp ground and join in with the bretheren. X. Fairview Items. You can hear the hum of the threshing machine around our town, daily. John Wagoner in companv with two other gentlemen got a second-hand thresh er and on the second job it got to clioke ing so often and one difficulty after another arose and they bad to quit the business. Camp meeting within four and a half miles is the Irading sensation all aronnd. Compliments to the new organized choir in the Presbyterian Church, they done splendidly last Sabbath. We notice thai J. M. Byers has traded horses which is something very extraordin ary, likely the first in the history of his life. DEHT. Sibley's Great Blast. Tin long-expected and much-advertised s .i-i*oh of Congressman Sibley of the Erie district in favor of free coinage ol silver was delivered in the House at Waahington last Friday morning, and from that stand point was a complete success. Commenc ing at 11 am., with less than seventy-five members in their seats, he continued for two hoars and a half, and long before the close every seat near him was occupied, while the aisles and well in front of the speaker were crowded. His remarks were more on the order of the demagogic stum p speaker, who relies upon the ignorance of his audience rather than upon a candid discussion of the grave issues at stake. llis speech was replete with anecdotes, which were heartily applauded. Mr. Sibley spoke from his seat near the front of the Democratic center. He seem ed entirely at his ease from the outset and was entirely free from the embarrassment that generally characterizes the first speech of a new member Mr. Sibley commenced in a low tone, but as he warmed up to his subject his voice rose in proportion. Ln iortunately he had pitched his voice too ! high, and before a half an hour had passed it was so husky that the water on his detk wo aid not clear it. His friend, Mr. Hatch, of Missouri, was equal to the occasion and supplied him with a glass of amber-colored liquid that probably wonld not meet the approval ol the Prohibitionists who voted for Mr. Sibiey last fall. In commencing his remarks Mr. Sib ley announced that he was a bimetalhst. He then proceeded to attack the bankers of New York upon whom he placed all the blame of the present panic. Their desire to have the government issue more bonus at par in order that they might reap a pre mium of 12 per cent, Mr. Sibley contended was tho canse of the present distress. Failing to force the issue of bonds, Mr. Sibley asserted Wall street brought on this panic as revenge and also to secure the present session of Congress with the <>pe that the issue would be ordered as; a meas ure of reliet. He then intimated that Wa street was the power that induced the call for the extra session. . As he launched forth his tirade against the New York bankers, Silver Dollar Bland and his followers showed their joy, and when he denounced them as blood suckers and vampires they applauded vociferously. Mr. Sibley's versatility was remarkable. In one breath he traced true DemQcracy back to the beginning of the Chi istian era and in the next discussed the great Amen can game of poker and talked fluently of "rake offs," "bluffs," "bobtails and "kittys." Later on he pictured the Amer ican farmer and mechanic as having e ® n ground down se low by the money sharks that their feet were blistered by the fire, while the fumes and oders of inferno en circled them. But probably the sensational point was when Mr. Sibley openly bid defiace to the president and administration. He said that if to secure patronage he must sacri fice his belief in free coinage he would ask for no patronage. But a moment later he stated he believed the great man in the White Hosse would much rather give pat ronage to meii who stood by their prin ciples than to milk-and-water men who were willing to bow the knee and sacrifice everything tor a little spoil. These re marks, of oourse, were cheered by the tree coinage men. . The general impression in the delegation is that Mr. Sibley's speeoh is a bold bid tor the gubernatorial nomination next year on a ticset indorsed dy the Prohibitionists, Populists and Democrats. It is an open secret that Mr. Sibley believes that with such an indorsement he can carry the state against any man except Charles w. Stone. He frankly states he would not ran aginst Mr. Stone. But he believes the Republicans will not nominate Stone, and so he is laying his plans on this con_ tingency and proposes to circulate 100, wu copies of his speech throughout the state as soon as they can be printed. Among those who listened to the whole speech was Representative Charles W. Stone, of Warren. Mr. Stone will speak next week from the standpoint of an honest dollar and no doubt will pay some atten tion to his erring colleague. Representa tive Dalzell, who will speak on Tuesday, also paid close attention, while nearly all the Pennsylvania delegation did likewise. As Mr.Sibley concluded his speech every free-coinage man called and congratulated him. Others on the opposite side of the question did also, not because they indors ed his views, but because lrom the Iree coinage view he made an excellent pre sentment. OK Thursday last, several hundred Frenchmen employed in the salt works at Aignes-Mortes, attacked a hundred and fifty Italians employed in same works, and killed nearly all of them. The affair creat ed much excitement in Itally; and also in Germany where it is looked upon as an outbreak against Italy as an ally for Ger many. A MOB of several thousand men forced an entrance info Walhala Hall in New York last Thursday, they having been re fused admittance, and attempted to hold a meeting; but the hall was cleared by the police. It was the first of the labor riots that have been predicted there for some time. I Could Not Wa'k i**^' 1 WBS bedfast most of f i the tlmo because of rlieu matism. I ato but little £.
